yes if I am cataloging a wasp for the first time I will try to catch and photograph it at home then release it... there is nothing worse then me finding a new wasp and not being able to get a photograph of it before it flies away.
I now have over 85+ wasps photographed and identified
Very nice. What is your secret for immobilizing them long enough to get the images you want and than releasing them without harm?
Richard
I wait for them to go to sleep... then i usually have around a minute or so while they are groggy to get a few shots... it isnt fool proof, i have chased many a wasp around my room with a butterfly net to catch the livelier ones. i suggest doing it in a small room in case that happens, low ceilings are best.

I like this technique: low risk for the wasps. Have you had them nap long enough to take multiple images for stacking?
I have covered insects in a light-tight container. Sometimes I place the container in the refrigerator, to slow the insects metabolism & activity.

That wasp appears to have only four legs! Is that a trick of the wasp or perspective? But, a good shot. Thank you.

Two front legs are lifted in front of face, like a preying mantis.
yes the wasp is cleaning its two front legs... i do not recommend putting the wasps in the fridge or freezer, while sometimes they are unharmed, it is easy to leave them in too long and they die, or they receive tissue damage and die within 24 hours of being taken out... that has happened to me several times and the wasps end up being pinned and added to my collection... i would consider that as a last resort but realize there is a good chance the wasp will die.
