Here are a few shots from last nights local basketball team. Always fun and exciting shooting the up and comers. I was using a 50mm 1.8 lens on a Nikon D3100 and a 70-200mm, 2.8 on a Nikon D7000 for these shots..........

Great shots,we find basketball and soccer as the most challenging sports to cover, non stop action.

Coco, those are very well done! I am amazed that at an indoor gym you were able to freeze action and get such bright clear shots. The lighting in most gyms suck. I suppose you used a high ISO setting, but the absence of noise suggests that you did not.
Yeah you have a good camera and lens, but there is more to it than that. Obviously you also know what you're doing!

I work fairly hard when I shoot a game. I get paid by the game and the faster I get in and get shots good enough to be published the faster I get home and that turns into more $$$ per hour. If it's a good game I might stay and watch but if it's not I'm out of there in 30-45 minutes. Thanks for looking and your kind words.........

I see what you mean by using a 70-200mm f/2.8 lens. What brand of lens do you use? I am looking to buy either a Sigma or Tamron for my Canon 60D. The Canon is to high priced for a retired person. With a lot of pratice I hope I can take great pictures like you and others have. Again thanks for the post.

I use a Tamron and I didn't get the one with image stabilization because I use this lens basically for 2 things which are indoor sports and night baseball. I figured as long as I'm pushing my shutter speed pretty fast the IS wouldn't make much difference. You can pick this lens up for $769 at Audorama or B&H. I just ordered the Tamron 24-70, 2.8 to replace my 50mm so I now have the spectrum of 24-200mm, 2.8 covered. This little puppy will run you around $1295 so for a mere $2100 you can be all set to shoot anywhere you want providing you have a camera body that can handle low noise at high ISOs. Another suggestion is just get the 70-200 and sit further up in the stands and the one lens should cover the entire court, then do a little cropping. I move around alot so that doesn't work for me.........
