Are you talking about a photography business, or something like auto dismantling??

This is a popular topic here. The best answer I have seen was posted in July. Click on the link below to read it.

Don't know yet. I suppose I will have to figure that one out. Going to start with family members and some scenery for framing.

Just a warning- this kind of thread will get some hot answers.

I'll start...

It's like asking,
"I'm new to cooking. I want to start a restaurant.
What kind of pans should I get?"

There is more to being a photographer than having the right equipment. Good photographers fail because they aren't good at the business end. Mediocre ones can last a long time because of good business practice and an uneducated client base.

Do you even know what kind of photography you are interested in?

Wedding, Portrait, Commercial, Architectural...

I also have a business degree and I am sure a good business mind is a prerequisite for starting a business of any sort. :D

That will help.
One of the higher-end portrait studios where I live was started and is owned by a guy who is not a photographer. He's a business man who knows how to run a business and hires talented photographers to do the shooting. Each person does what they do best.

Yep! The posts were informative. More to this business than posing the client with the client's suggestions in mind, and snapping 100 shots in 15 minutes, then selling the client a disc and expecting said client to edit said photos after which the amount of $100 is paid. No expense on the photographer's part with that sitting. Clear money! :-D

Know anything about lighting?
It's half of the word photo-graph.
Having it is one thing, using it correctly is another and can make or break a photo.
Every area has it's special problems:
For example, weddings: back-up equipment, knowing that equipment instinctively, dealing with bridezillas & momzillas, posing groups, working well under pressure, shooting in unfriendly lighting situations... it goes on and on.

What is your skill level?
What equipment do you own?
Software?
Besides family and friends, how many people have given you positive feedback on your photography?
Do you have a business plan? Business model?
Do you know what your COG is?
Have you filed for a business licenses? Tax ID Number? Insurance? Any other licenses or permits your town, county, state require?
