Help with new Tamron 90mm.

Do you think that the new Tamron 90mm with image stabilizer is worth $300 (approx.) more than the regular 90mm without?

My friend is ready to make a purchase. She is fairly new to macro and is not crazy about using a tripod.

Is using a tripod a "must" for macro?

Without a tripod would the image stabilizer make that much of a difference and make up for not using the tripod?

Thanks for any advice!

A lens you keep forever. It is my opinion you get the best and never look back.

By far, most of the macro-photographers on this forum have matriculated to hand-held macro work. I only use a tripod when working in a controlled "studio" situation, whether indoors or outdoors.

I usually shoot living insects in the field. My normal Working Distance is 6-inches to 12-inches. About 2-years ago, I upgraded from an A-F, non-VR macro lens, to an A-F + VR lens. My 'keep rate' improved dramatically.

She must have her reasons for choosing the Tamron lens. Personally, I think a good illumination solution is more important than vibration control. That is something that your friend might want to consider, if she does not already have a good speedlight.

Do you mean a regular flash or something like a ring light?

Personally I use a speedlight with a bracket and a diffuser, many of us use different solutions, it is personal preference.
