Phreedom Loc: Kitchener, Ontario, Canada

This film, taken by a camera mounted on the front of a cable car, was originally thought to be from 1905 until David Kiehn with the help of the Niles Essanay Silent Film Museum figured out exactly when it was shot. It was filmed only four days before the Great California Earthquake of April 18th 1906 and was shipped by train to NY for processing.

The clock tower at the end of Market Street at the Embarcadero wharf is still there.

Some of the cars had steering wheels on the right side. The driving habits are insane; no wonder laws had to be created. It looks like everybody just took the right of way.

I found this film very moving. All those people unaware of the horror to come. Also, earthquake or not, everyone in this film is dead now - makes you think about life's transient nature.
