Extension tubes question

When extention tubes are used , it is said it lets you focus closer on your subject. Does this mean you can get physically closer to your subject and still be able to focus or does it bring your subject matter closer by zooming effect? I hope this makes sense. In other words, if without tubes my 1:1 macro is 6.5 inches from the subject, does that mean if I use extension tubes it will let me get closer than 1:1 if I take a picture at say 4.5 inches. I hope this makes sense enough to answer my question. Thanks .

When I shoot at Minimum Focusing Distance with my Nikkor 105-mm macro lens, my Working Distance is about 6-3-inches, rendering 1:1 magnification (life-size).
With 68-mm of extension tubes added to the exact same scenario, my WD is about 4-inches, rendering 2:1 mag (2x life-size).

105-mm MWD field of view on DX sensor = life-size
105-mm MWD field of view on DX sensor = life-size...

105-mm MWD field with 68-mm tubes on DX sensor

Kind of what I thought. It actually allows you to get closer to your subject (WD) and the results are actually greater than actual size. Correct?

Thanks for clearing that in my mind. Sometimes it's better to ask than to second guess what your doing. Once again, the UHH comes through in the pinch.
