Photography in the Dark

I live near a state park that occasionally hosts, "Moonlight Rides", horse trail rides after dark. They like to leave just before the full moon rises, so I'm pretty much shooting in the dark. The horses are beautifully decorated with glow sticks and I would love to photograph them, showing the glow stick decoration, but still maintaining the suggestion of night. I spoke to some of the horse owners and they don't want any extra light as it ruins the horses' night vision. I tried a lantern, but it just didn't give enough light. Someone suggested a camp fire, but it isn't allowed in that part of the park. Naturally, I used a tripod and am able to shoot on manual setting. Problem is that the horses always seem to be moving to some degree, so I would need a shutter speed to accomodate that. Attached is my feeble attempt at the last ride. My dad suggested an infra red camera. Any other suggestions?

Crank up the ISO and shoot awat. I often shoot at 6400 ISo at night, handheld, with very acceptable results. But that does depend on your camera and lens.

I have read the Nikon D7000,can take images in "near darkness".....
Pickup an extremely fast lens.
I have no idea, it may get the job done.
Maybe, others will jump in.
Oh, MT already has.

infrared in this case is not going to help.

Crank up the ISO, lower the fstop and hope you can get 250 of seconds for you speed.

Take it at the lowest light levels that you can with your kit and still have the horses sharp.
Darken it in post work - maybe even selectively darken.

In full moon conditions:
Aperture priority.
ISO 6400
AF 35mmf1.8 G lens or faster (50mm f1.4) set wide open
Set High ISO noise reduction to "normal"
If you are using a Nikon D7k, set image capture to Jpg only, normal (you won't tell the difference between normal and fine). If you shoot RAW and Jpg with NR active, your buffer will fill very quickly as each image will take a long time to process before it is written to the card.

Depends on the camera you have. I shoot with the Pentax K-5 at high ISO-25,000 with NR on. Then in photoshop use the Neat Image plug in for Noise Reduction. I have had good results so far.
