Not the Sporting Life.
I'll be blunt. I've never been into major team sports. I don't watch football, basketball, baseball or hockey. I don't know who the Packers are playing or who the basketball champions are shaping up to be or even who won the world series. Really. My definition of March Madness is wishing people would just shut up about it.
Sure, I'll watch an occasional game with friends - but I don't follow sports. I'm not an uber-nerd. I am an avid cyclist and hiker, just not into the socially popular organized sporting world.
So, what should a guy like me say when all around me -especially at work, it seems almost expected amongst the testosterone-laden crowd that everyone know what's happening in sports - and if you don't, you're some kind of freak?
I'm so often asked, "how about that game last night?" and when I kindly explain that I don't watch much sports - the conversation screeches to a awkward halt - even after I offer up a different topic (how was your weekend? hows that project you're working on, etc). Is there no other "small talk" available?
So - my Hedgehog friends - both sporting lovers and otherwise - how can a non-sporting type mix with the sporting life around him? I thank you for your advice in advance. :)
Next time they ask you about sports, tell them you were busy with your girlfriend--- wink- wink--- and didn't see it. You prefer to be involved in the action rather than watch it on the tube. Lol

Try this .....
"I had to give up watching sports, it just made me too unpredicatable and violent!", then after sufficient pause, "My parole officer suggested I take up photography."
the next time someone ask you about a sporting event, respond by asking them how their sex life is
It sounds like you really want to fit in. If you REALLY don't want to take the time to watch your local football team every week, watch the sports update that will give you the highlights. Without watching the game you can make reasonable small talk about it.
I used to try to make small talk about sports until I was talking one evening and asked about dribbling in a football game.

Easy,...when there talking about foot ball,...ask how many home runs have been scored.
If there talking about baseball,...ask how many touchdowns have been scored.
Mix will be resolved ;-)

Life's short; make what matters in your life your focus. Everything else is relegated to ho-hum. I've excelled at wasting time - especially on this forum. So far, so good.
Tell them you watch sophisticated sports like Curling and Cricket and tell them you appreciate a good century every once in a while.

Am praying your Chemo goes well today and that your are clean of that nasty stuff soon.
I am glad to know that I am not the only one that doesn't pay attention to sports. Since your are a cyclist you can say something like "I was studying the latest Armstrong statements about Drug use. What do you think?" That should slow them down. Instead of hiking start running a little, 1/2 marathon's are good; Music City Marathon in the spring, and bring up the difference between the Music City Marathon (over 30,000 runners) the the New York Marathon. Geography and such. Or Ragnar relays from Chattanooga to Nashville; they will have an international relay in the spring from USA through Canada. Mostly I don't even worry about fitting in, at my age I only fit in at senior centers and they won't let me in because I an too sour.

When asked about football I usually say that ManUnited barely held off Aresnal and expanded their lead at the top of the table. It will make it tougher for Man City to catch up. By the way, where the heck is Rooney?
