I have been using my point and shoot since the beginning of last summer because I am still trying to figure out the settings of my Canon Rebel XTI. I had a little Samsung, and now I also have an Olympus TG1 that has been teaching me the meaning of some terms such as iso and macro. I bought a field guide for the Rebel, so hopefully that will help. But I am curious....what IS wrong with Canon? I was reading the last blog. And also what do you mean when you talk about wide frame?

Hi and welcome.
Are you asking what is wrong with Cannon? or What is IS? Being a Cannon user I don't see much wrong with them. IS is cannons Image Stabiliser, it helps to overcome camera shake when taking pictures. The rule of thumb for shutter speeds (on non IS lenses) is minimum speed for taking a hand held picture is 1/effective focoul length of the lens. So for a 50MM lens mimium shutter speed on a Rebel would be 1/80th sec. The IS should allow you to shoot at a slower speed of maybe around 1/25th sec.
Not sure about wide frame unless they are talking about wide angle lenses for landscapes.
If any of what I have said is not what you ar asking, sorry don't mind me I just ramble on.

Hi Nightski, welcome to the hog. You have a great camera now, it takes time to learn how to use it, as with any camera. So, dont get discouraged. There is nothing wrong with Canon. But then again there is nothing wrong with any dslr cameras, you just have to decide which feels best to you. Dont listen to people that say "my camera is better than any other camera. As i said, some have more bells and whistles than others. This is what makes for competition. Just look at them ALL and then choose...but you already did, you have a Canon Rebel, keep using it.

What's wrong with CANON is even CANON users can't spell it correctly. Only one N in Canon. :-) just joking with you!!!!! I shoot with a Canon 40d and simply love it. The regular brands of cameras you find out in the market, there will be different issues with each one. They all do a decent job and there really isn't much difference between them all. It usually comes down to what "Feels" good in your hand. Just my 2cents worth. Again, Welcome to the HOG! Cheers.

Thank-you for the welcome. I have a question on the Canon Rebel xti that I have. I am reading the owners manual, but I just wish I knew where to start taking pictures outside of the auto mode. Should I start with the the P, M, the Tv, the Av, or the A-DEP? Would anyone be willing to give me a specific assignment with specific settings, so I could go try it and possibly be successful. I feel sort of overwhelmed by all the different things you have to consider when the camera isn't doing it for you in auto. Also, can I damage the lens if I don't have that Af- mf button pushed to the right settting?

Leave it on af(auto focus). If on mf you will have to focus it manually. Read the manual on taking pictures on TV and AV.Have fun. Ray.

I agree with raysass-- Read the manual. The function I found so useful on my digital camera was the DELETE button.
Try different settings; experiment. Most of all-- get out, have fun, see the sights, learn along the way.
Read the How To books after you become familiar with YOUR camera.

Welcome to UHH. It was a Rebel xti that got me started in photography. It is a great camera, with lots of capability.
I would advise you to spend an afternoon shooting in AV. Take the same shot at several different aperature settings, so that you can see the effect that they have on how much of your image is in focus (depth of field). Learning this is the key to controlling what your photos will look like. Have fun!
