Cracker House

Many of the original settlers and their progeny are referred to as "Crackers". This name derived from the bull whips they used to drive cattle, they would "crack" them. Since their was no air conditioning, the homes had large wrap-around porches to keep the cool air in. Many of them had a metal roof to channel the heavy rains off. I thought some of you may like to see what it looked like.

Enjoy,
Larry

Beautiful style of home, a lot like our Creole Cottages here.

Beautiful shot. :) It looks like it's well taken care of.
I've put a couple of metal roofs up. I'm glad that I didn't have to do this one. That top portion would really be tough.

This is a newer home but built in the Cracker style. Many of the older homess were two story as well.

Nothing any more soothing than the sound of a gentle rain falling on a tin roof.
