Here we are in the middle of winter and we're seeing sights like this. In SE Kansas rainbows aren't a common scene this time of the year but last night we were treated to a real beauty.

This is a 5 shot panorama...

Nice. I have never seen this before- it does look like a dome with a rainbow above it. Is this common?

Beautiful shot. An interesting scientific fact is that rainbows always occur in pairs: the secondary rainbow is considerably dimmer than the main one and sometimes hard to discern; also significant is that there is always a darker sky area between the two and that the colors are also reversed on the secondary rainbow. Check it out.

Thanks Julian, I didn't know that rainbows will always occur in pairs, very interesting.

All rainbows are full circles, with the center of the rainbow in line with your eye and the sun. Only when the sun is right at the horizon can you see a half circle. Want to check it out, use a garden hose to create your own rainbow.

so that's why the arc of this rainbow looks so full, this was right at sunset, interesting. So a rainbow earlier in the day would be a more shallow arc...?
