No matter where the f - stop is set at, it is really dark in the view finder. Also while trying to focus in, I can only see through one half of the curcle.
It sounds like the aperture isn't opening - like it's stuck on the minimum aperture. If you look into the front of the lens and run through the f-stops, can you see the aperture open up?
You can also try this: Look for a little lever or stem on the back of the lens. Gently slide it to the side and see if the aperture gets bigger. It should be spring loaded so it will snap back to f/22 or so.

I have watched it while changing the f -stop and it does not move. The hole stays the same size.

I'll check this out tonight when I get home. I hope it isn't messed up, looks like a good lens to use.

It may still be -- just at f/22 ;)
Sounds like a compatibility problem. The older lenses defaulted to the smallest f/ stop until they were mounted to the camera. If that's the problem, I don't have a solution.
Thats a good possibility.
I checked the lens lastnight like you state to SnowBear. The stem feels like the spring is attatched but has a little bit of slack and when moved it does not change the f -stop at all. I also moved the f - stop setting and this did not change it either.
Sounds like a "busted" lens?

Thats kinda what I'm thinking as well.
I just came into this conversation because of issues at work, but I agree with what has been said. It sounds to me like the return spring for the aperture is broken. It's a Vivitar, so it is a good lens. It shouldn't be all that costly to fix, so you might want to at least take it to a camera repair shop and have them give you an estimate.

You might try getting a quote from keh.com for the repair. I haven't personally used them, but have heard good things about them and they seem very reasonable on repairs.
I am going to find out how much to repair. I do have a Wolf Camera shop about 15 to 20 min from home.
Before you go to the repair shop, check what a used lens like that is going for.
Good Idea Sensei, I'll check on getting a replacement as well as cost of repair. Then make the obvious choce of what to do.
