Yes, that is exactly what it does - it sends ads to people on your address book. Thanks to my computer savvy son it is gone. I am sorry you lost a friend over it. It's embarrassing to have a virus, people automatically think you aren't using virus protection, but I always have. Some of them just get through anyway.

I was getting emails returned to me that I hadn't sent

I had something similar to that but it was not from this site. It originated from an email, then sent bogus emails to people in my contact list. My sister had it and I got it from her email to me. If ya can't trust family .......lol.

it probably was in an email to me also - i was just stating that i could have passed it here unknowingly by coming to the site and not knowing i had it. I wasn't sure it didn't come from here either but the more i think about it i do remember getting an ad email from one of my friends and asked her what it was she was sending but she never replied... i think that is where it came from. it had a link in it but i didn't click it - just opened the email.

Yeah same with me. I opened it because it was from my sister but as soon as I did I knew she didnt send it. Don't know why people feel they need to do things like that.

Maybe things have changed, but I always thought a virus had to be activated in some way, such as clicking on a link in an email or on a website, or downloading an infected ".exe" file or a zip file containing an ".exe" file.
Not so much anymore. There are so many kinds of files now that can 'embed' themselves in your OS somewhere without you even knowing it. The number of ways an infected file can get in to your system is almost endless. Background transfers, infected image files, rogue "spyware alert" software that infects your computer with a trojan when you click "Get a Free Scan NOW!", the list goes on and on. The best one can do is keep the spyware and virus software up to date, and learn how not to do stupid stuff.

For the uninitiated, there is NO WAY an "anti-spyware" program can know your system has "326 trojans, spyware and viruses" in the 5 seconds it takes to load that bogus web page. Nearly ALL of those programs are false-front spyware delivery vehicles that will infect your computer before you can say diddly squat. DO NOT fall for the "Free PC Scan".

Tell me about it. Both my brother and I got free scan which found over a thousand problems which they wanted me to pay to fix. We did not and our computers were REALLY messed up after that. We both had a very hard time fixing it and I don't even remember how I did it. I agree, don't fall for the 'free pc scan'
