Can you manually adjust focus with your lens? If you cant...you wont be able to get that effect.

The lens has a manual focus? Not the exposure mode...the lens...can you push..pull....or turn it?

I'm guessing your bridge camera has a button you press to zoom the lens, correct? If so, maybe the camera locks the zoom in place during a long exposure. (I don't think it has anything to do with manual focus)

Rob he's trying to get "zoom blur".....the lens has to move...in or out...while the shutter is open to get this effect. I don't know of a bridge camera that can do that...its all electric zoom.

yeah, I got that, but I don't think changing the focus is going to achieve the effect he wants. At least as I understand the zoom effect I've seen. But you may be right.

I think you're gonna need a dslr with a zoom lens to do this. This was back from 2008...which the only time that I can remember doing it...didn't like the results...which is why I've never attempted it again.

Canon SX's can't do it. Unless you use the really old-school zoom where you physically move toward or away from your subject with the shutter open. (Please post if you shoot some that way!)...
EDIT: hey, I just had to try one with my SX30, but it was hard to find appropriate subject matter. Here's my wife cooking tacos for dinner. Pretty tough...

I have a fuji hs30 with manual zoom that does a great job with zoom blur

you could always just take a longer exposure and run closer to your subject :-)

Hi-if you can't get it with a camera, you can do it in Photoshop and I think in Photoshop Elements. I hav'nt tried it it but have see images in books and magazines using the software in post-production. Hope that helps. I am kinda new to the group but have enjoyed it very much and have recieved a lot of great help also. Good Luck

I don't know about the new Lumix bridge cameras but my FZ30 is a manual zoom only. So I guess mine is the exception...

Hi-I have the lumix fz150--haven't even thought about that trick--but now I think I'll try next time I'm out with it.

I have a few Canon P&S's and a couple bridges. None of them will let me change zoom when the shutter is open. You need a strictly mechanical zoom.
