A few Ducks in-flight.

Bret, good job of capturing these Mallards in flight! #3 looks like the camera focused on the bird's wrist and you didn't quite have enough DOF to get the head in focus, too. Is this the full frame? Becasue if it is or is just a little cropped then the bird was quite close to you. Remember, as your focus distance decreases, so does your DOF. You may have been better off zooming out just a tad so you could get the focus point on the head while still getting the entire bird in the frame. Either that or learn to move your focus point "in-flight" but that is a tough one to do. What was your shutter speed?

Zoom?.....not really with a fixed 500mm F8 lens. These where at 1/1000s iso 800.

Yes with that lens....its pan and focus. Trick is getting the available light/iso right...just to get the shutter speed needed for BIF shots.

In bright sun, you should be able to get 1/2000 easily at f/8 and ISO 800.

Yes Iv'e had some success at that iso....trying to work my way down to 640 is kinda tricky.

It shouldn't be, Bret. You could shoot at 1/1600, f/8, ISO 640 in bright sun and that would be a close equivalent to the sunny 16 rule. This is a situation that may benefit from auto ISO, especially if you are using a tripod where you could go longer on your shutter duration, 1/500 say, and let the camera pick the ISO.
Give it some thought or better yet, try it out!

I think I will....as soon as the dreaded Ohio weather wants to cooperate...lol
