Half your luck, was there nov 2011,the south island is just beautiful, doesn't matter where you go.one thing to remember in NZ is the time it takes you to travel anywhere'don't judge by distance judge by time,it's very hilly and curvy.,have a great trip.regards ringo

You fly in to Christchurch? Driving south avoid the main highway, SH1, use the inland highway. The Road from Christchurch South is the most boring part of our country. I am oftenn told that by tourists. The upper bridge over the Rakaia river, is a scenic spot. Skirt around the base of Mt Hutt, our skifield. thru Mayfield to Geraldine where you will turn in to the Mount Cook section. Depending on weather and time of day for lighting, Fairlie Basin very photogenic, as are our man-enhanced lakes in the McKenzie basin. Thru to Omarama and thru Lindis pass, to Cromwell and on to Queenstown, or accross to Wanaka and then thru to QT. I'll PM you maybe, or you me.

One famous NZ attraction is the Milfor Walking track. But takes 4 or 5 days. A 30 minute return walk, as good as the best parts (of the Milford) , is at Sharplins Falls, 5 minutes drive in from Stavely about an hour south of Christchurch, on the inland highway. I was there last weekend, will post you a photo. And I agree with Ringo, particularly American tourists look at the map and say, oh yes 300 miles here to there no problem, but it's different. What are your interests? I'm sure there is an aviation museum in Wanaka area. Andrew

Well its all good advice here so can't add to much except 10 days is not really long enough it sounds like a bit of a rushed trip and why the hell are you not coming to the north Island?

Why would you want tourists to come to the North Island? It's pretty boring here

Oh and watch out for the man eating sheep. A few years back there were some rogue ones that escaped a shed on a farm where they were experimenting with their genes. They are killers, can take your leg off in one bite...haven't you seen the movie? True story

Abel Tasman Park has scenery to die for! Water Taxis, Kayaks and just walking awesome. Akaroa on Banks peninsular is a snapper's paradise. The Post Boat on Marlborough Sound from Picton is worth the trip. North of Kaikoura (near 'Nins Bin') is a Lay-by with a track leading up to as Fairy-Tale Grotto where hundreds of young seals play in a pool at the foot of a beautiful waterfall.
We've had two 4-week trips to NZ and each time wasn't long enough - start saving now for your next trip! And don't miss the Onsen Hot Pools at Queenstown; try a plane trip from Tekapo round Mt Cook; don't miss an evening trip to Mount John Observatory; etc., etc....

Lake Matheson, Mount Cook, The Southern Scenic Route is an amazing drive, The Otago Peninsula to see not only the Albatross but also the rare Yellowed Eyed Penguins, Queenstown and if you have time, from Christchurch you can drive the challenging Summit Road from Christchurch to the French settlement of Akaroa, which is lovely. You can also do white water rafting at Murchison...do take lots of insect repellent, sand flies are rife on the South Island. Milford Sound is amazing and after all this travelling, relax in the hot pools at Hamner Springs.http://www.uglyhedgehog.com/compose_reply.jsp?topicnum=88320#

Swimming with the dolphins and whale watching at Kaikora is a must and after all this travelling, relax in the hot pools at Hamner Springs. Most of all take the time to look around at the wonderful views and enjoy.
p.s...DO TAKE LOTS OF INSECT REPELLENT, sand flies are rife on the South Island.
