Some odd UHH site stats

Examining available public data on UHH, I've managed to figure out a few things about UHH users that others may find interesting. I've noticed a few posts inquiring on some of this stuff in the past...

Some UHH site stats as of Jan 6th, 2013:

- (Site launched around Jul 1, 2011)
- Of about 27,860 current registered users, nearly half (over 13,000) registered during 2011, in the site's first 6 months.
(Obviously, Admin has had SEO visibility dialed in!)
- 43% of Registered Users have never posted a message
- 60% of Registered Users have not created any topics
- 63% of Registered Users are "in hiding"
- about 25% of Registered Users have posted an Avatar pic
- almost 1200 users have 1 topic created and 1 message posted (which tells me that they apparently never came back to respond to posters on their topic)
- only about 14% of users have entered any "Biography" data, and most are fairly brief. Of note, though...
- some 7 users have broken the 500-word mark on their "Bio" entry, (with some pretty impressive stuff, I must say!).
- honorable mention to user RandySprout as the sole user to break the 1000-word mark on his Bio.

I am still trying to make any sense at all of everybody's "Location" entries, since what got me going on this in the first place was trying to figure out where everyone is... :)

Wow - I love this sort of info but don't know where to look it up

My location is reasonably exact within .5 mile

Cheers

That's the thing, there really isn't anyplace I know of where you can look up this kind of info. Number crunching is rather a hobby of mine, so I've been testing some new (for me) methods of gathering numbers to crunch.
As far as the "Location" data, it is so irregular as to be unmanageable by any automated process. People put all kinds of stuff in there, and sometimes it's not even a location. I wonder if Admin would consider adding fields for entering location by Zip/Postal Code, or better yet, GPS coordinates...

Location by GPS coordinates - that would be something

Just how do you get a hobby like number crunching websites

We are the size of a small town! Maybe we could have elected representation in the Florida State Legislature!

That's another good question! Maybe it's time to concoct some Bio data of my own.
Briefly, my work experience includes automating image and other media processing for e-commerce sites, and building databases for managing media libraries and other web content. A big part of the projects often includes gathering pricing and other data on competitors, which often entails gathering piles of data they'd rather you didn't have - hence my interest in "alternative" methods. This is a great site for testing due to the fairly high traffic while not being "e-commerce" per se.

(Note to Admin, if you're watching: UHH User data I have collected will not be aggregated for release to anyone else, and will not be presented elsewhere other than a possible additional "stats digest" as posted above. This is purely a study exercise.)

Okay, since I was doing this "data mining" type project here, and I am supposed to be some kind of image processing specialist anyway, I just HAD to do something fun and educational with everybody's avatar pics... So I took all 6800 of them and made a big slideshow movie where each avatar enjoys 1/10th of a second on screen, yielding about an 11-minute play time. It looks a little prettier as an animated GIF, but is rather unwieldy in that format at 225MB(!), so I have it rendered into an .mpeg instead for portability, a mere 17.6MB. (Just try making a 6800-frame GIF animation in Photoshop btw... on 2nd thought, don't do it that way!)

SO.... If anybody is still reading this... I am pondering a couple of questions that I hope at least a few folks could weigh in on:
- - - - - - -
1. Would I be inappropriately ripping off everybody's avatar pics to make a 1-frame appearance to be published only in a "UHH Members Only" slideshow? (video yearbook??)

2. Although I could PM everybody who has an avatar pic to ask permission, I would rather not abuse the system that way (nor spend time programming for it!). But should individual permissions be requested or necessary? Would the ©opyright police want my head?

3. Anybody interested in how to do this? (it took me a couple of days to figure it out)

4. Anybody wanna see it?

The fact that someone might use my avatar in that fashion has led me to remove it entirely. I may eventually replace it with one that is not a photo of me.

Whether or not permissions are necessary, using avatars ( particularly those that are photos of the members ) without permission would be rude and inconsiderate.

We can't agree on anything. How could we ever elect anybody? Somebody even posted a simple "Merry Christmas" post in chit-chat and it turned into a religious free for all. In a way, that was very sad.

Not speaking as a legal expert (I didn't even stay in a Holiday Inn last night) seems to me if you post an avatar on a public forum, the avatar ought to be able to be used in any manner posted on that forum.

But yeah, I'd like to see that.

And my location posted is only the town I live in. There are days I have no idea where I actually am!

I see nothing wrong with it and wouldn't mind seeing it. If you posted your photo on "public property" why can't the public see it?.I am sure you will stir up a "hornets nest" with this one, good luck!
