Old slides and negatives

I have hundreds of slides (positives) and negatives with contact sheets--is there any way to get them onto my computer (Mac), sort them and be able to print and/or manipulate them with current software?

Look at the Epson V500 PHOTO Scanner, it will scan slides, negatives and sheet images.

Thanks MT--looks like the V500 has the best features for the serious amateur. I ordered one right from Epson for $150 net (no tax and no shipping)!

Thanks for this info!! I just recently found my box of hundreds of slides and B&W negatives (some even won prizes back then) in my attic from the '70's. I was going to pay to have them scanned but it will be more expensive than buying the V500.

I agree with Shooter in the Epson V500.
I have recently acquired one & finished off a large slide project & then scanned several hundred B&W negatives. Did a great job but just in case the sensors are delicate, I'd give this suggestion.
My first scanner was a lemon but was replaced. The problem was with slides & more specifically their frames.
Some I had were Agfa frames with some white & some dark blue. It was suggested that the colour was upsetting the sensor & the results were frustrating.
I overcame that by sacrificing 4 dud slides to get the white frames of other type of frame & placed it in each of the holder appertures thus giving a white face to the sensor.
I also have a Canon MP970 print, scan, copy machine which also scans slides but not the larger 122 or 116 neg's.
If you're scanning 122 size neg's, you lose a strip of width since the scan strip is only a little less than 3 inches. This didn't worry my project since a little sky or foreground is expendable in most cases & I've just done a thousand of them or more. Also scan at high res first time, one time. It's slower but if you have a good pic you don't have to go back & rescan. Then do your PP later.
Happy scanning & hope you have lots of time.
For What It's Worth.---- IMHO.

I just posted an opinion to someone elses query.
If you're scanning B&W neg's leave the holder frame out & find the position on the glass.122 size film is 5.5 inches long by 3.25 wide & there is a limit to the width of the scan but if you experiment with position you chose which bit you sacrifice.
116 film is 4.25" long by 2.5 wide. They fit ok & you can get 2 in at a time lengthwise saving quite a lot of time.
Maybe I'm jumping the gun since you're only thinking of getting a V500 scanner. If that is your project, go for it. You'll not be disappointed. It's about the only credible machine in the amateurs price range available that scans B&W negs.
In Australia they're very expensive. I screwed my price down from $400+ to $314 aud. You pay about $150? usd.
