D700 bracketing problem

Am I doing something wrong? I wanted to try some bracketing with my D700, but so far I have only succeeded in setting my camera in such a way that I must depress the function button simultaneously with the shutter release to enable bracket shooting. Is this the best setup, or am I seriously misunderstanding my manual and web tutorials?

Additionally, is it reasonable to shoot brackets handheld?

yes, I bracket with mine all the time

if I remember correctly (early morning) you just go into the menu to AEB function and dial in the number of shots and the spacing.

If your intent is to use the bracketed images for HDR, probably should use a tripod unless you are able to brace yourself on something solid. No problem if not for HDR.

So then it is not possible to set up for bracketing without having to depress 2 buttons simultaneously?

I don't understand what you mean about 2 buttons at the same time.

You go into the menu to AEB and then dial in how many shots you want to take , with the D700 you can also pick spacing stops; i.e. 1/3, 1/2 or full stops.

Then when shooting, just fire the shutter, i.e. if your bracketing 3 shots, just fire the shutter three times .

The only think, remember after your finished with bracketing to remove the AEB command from the menu or it will continue to bracket.

I guess a trip to my local repair shop is in order. I have attempted several different settings, and cannot find one that enables bracketing by just depressing shutter release. I must use another finger to depress the function button while depressing the shutter release to shoot brackets.

Have you gone into the menu and told the camera you want to AEB? If you don't do that, you can't bracket unless you do it manually.

Yes, I have.

Further web digging has uncovered (I believe) the missing link. I found that setting the shooting mode to continuous (low or high) enables me to bracket with only the shutter release.
