I don't understand the word "studders". "Almost new", are they still under warranty. A canon lens, when it hunting for focus emits a whirring sound.
I don't see anything wrong with the images that would be indicative of a problem with equipment. Canon tech support is 1-800-OKCANON

The longer lens will seem like its going back and forth but it is trying to focus.
I agree if you have a question contact canon either thru email or phone, they are really great. I've even called them on my older Canon 10D and they are more then happy to help.
They also have a section on their website for common questions

I have the same lens, and it will kind of stutter if it is trying to focus, but unable to find something to focus on, and my cameras usually will not shoot if the lens has not been able to focus. There should be a focus confirmation light visible in the viewfinder (I believe a solid circle in the lower right, but check your manual) and this will blink if the camera was unable to focus. Try focusing on something with a lot of contrasting edges (a treeline a ways away, perhaps) and see if that will focus then.

Yooper you mentioned a very key step when dealing with problems with not just cameras but any electronics, computers etc. CHECK YOUR MANUAL.

Canon does seem to not want to focus if it is too dark..try some shots where you know there is plenty of light and see if the same problem persists

Check your manual...what a novel idea...a slap head moment.
It will fully explain how the AF works, including, what is required to have it work at it's best.

When you push the shutter release button half way down that causes the camera to get focused. The 'shuddering' is not a defect, its the action of the lens being focused. The pic's submitted do not indicate any problems with the focus
or anything else for that matter that is apparent to me.

The various comments made about reading the manual are well intended reminders, even for experienced photographers.

I'm sure Canon will be able to take care of any malfuntions with the lens &/or camera since apparently they are recent purchases. Hopefully they are both still covered on warranty's.

All of us are learning the many phases of digital photography, with the equipment and software related to it. Its a never ending process with the introduction of new products and systems constantly.

It looks like this is the right place to pursue that search for knowledge, and we all learn from the 'mistakes' or successes of others. Your photos indicate your doing very well in that regard, just keep moving ahead as you are. We will all be learning along with you. You have every reason to be confident in your Rebel! I'm not a Canon user, but have seen some excellent photos from users that are, amateurs (beginners?) included.

It sounds like the AF setting on your camera is on 'One Shot'. If the lense can't find focus, the camera won't take that shot. It also sounds like the studder you are encountering is that lense trying to focus. Change the AF setting (with the middle button behind the shutter button on top of your camera) to 'AL Servo' if your subject is 'moving'. Remember to push your shutter button down halfway and give the lense time to focus before you take the shot. That lense has a focusing distance switch that can be set for a specific distance. See the manual for the lense and it will discribe it's function.
