D300 Format

The two red format buttons on my D300 won't format the memory card. Am I doing something wrong or what ? The other method works fine.

The "other method" is through the Menu? I've never heard of the red buttons not working (Is Red Buttons still alive?), but if you can format through the Menu, then the SD card and the camera are working. How old is the camera, and how much use has it gotten?
You're relying on two buttons to work simultaneously. Do those buttons do what they're supposed to do individually. My red buttons (D600) are for Trash and Metering.

The two buttons I refer to are the "mode" and "trash". When they are pushed, "for" appears and flashes, but it does not format. They work otherwise. I don't know how old the camera is, but it has 40k snaps. This is really not a big problem, just wondering.

It looks like the buttons are good, but they don't work together to format. I'm surprised that "for" appears, but it doesn't format. Since you can format using the Menu, you can still use the camera. Actually, Nikon says to format when using a card for the first time in the camera, but not after every use. You can leave it the way it is. I bet a repair would be rather pricey.
Wait a minute. After you press the buttons and see "for," you have to let go of them and press and hold them again for it to format. Have you done that?

after for appears ... you have to push both buttons a second time .............
