Just to stir the pot a little. I read in a Consumers Report (Nov. I think) that the t3i is better than the t4i. Any comments?

What did they say made the T3i better between the two?

The T4i has the newer processor, slightly higher ISO, touch screen, and focus support for videos through the STM lens.

If video is of no consequence to you, and you don't care for a touch screen, the T3i might be the better buy for you- save you a few dollars. The image quality between the two is almost the same, especially at the RAW level. The processors do process the JPEGs files a little differently so the JPEG files right out of the camera do look different.

No, they said it was a better value for the price, not a better camera.
The t4i is clearly better than the t3i, and it costs more then the t3i.
But while it costs almost 2x as much it is not 2x better.
So it is with almost anything in this world.

See the attached screen dump from Consumer Report November 2012. It does not really show that either camera is better. Look at their scores- 70 and 71. The thing to note is that they listed 12 different DSLR cameras and their overall scores ranged from 65 to 74. The highest camera was the Canon 60D and in the 12th place was the Nikon D5000.

This little article (?) really said nothing.

Sadly, Consumer Reports is no longer the gold standard of product evaluation it once was. I miss that former unique empirical objectivity.

I'm not a Canon shooter but isn't the T4i an upgraded verson of the T3i ?

If you look really close at the screen dump, you will notice it is the T3 and not the T3i.

Festina, I agree. 30-40 years ago you could have an idea of products from Consumers Report by their testing and reviews. Now days it is of little or no value for info on any product. Sometime, I think early/mid 70's I subscribed for a couple of years. TNmike

Yes, it is the next model in the Rebel series with more advanced features and better specifications.

I have seen this mentioned more than once. The T4i, however, is better for shooting video. Canon has begun making lenses specifically for this camera, and specifically for video. They are compatable with other Canon models. I have the T2i, which is possibly the best model in this series, and I just bought the new "pancake" lens. It is the Canon 40mm f/2.8 STM. The "STM" means that, while on the T4i only, the focus will change automatically when you move from subject, to subject. I bought it for the focal length, and constant f/2.8. I never shoot video, and I wish Canon would have used the extra "technology" on my T2i for something else. I know they are going after the everyday consumer when they add video, but to me, it's a waste.

Why would you say this? Clearly the T4i is more camera than the T3i.

I read many reviews from different sources before I decided it was a good investment to upgrade from the 3Ti to the 4Ti. I've only had my new one for a week, but I'm very pleased so far. I'm really enjoying the touch screen! I haven't been able to put it down...New toys are great!
