Hi. I use PSE 10, I am not to sure about actions, I downloaded one this morning to use with some IR files. When I opened the zip file PSE opened. So I figured the action would show up in the menu some where, I couldn't find it.

So I am wondering can you use actions with PSE 10? And if yes. Where can I access the action?

Thanks in advance

Under the Window menu you will see Actions. If you click on it it will open the actions section. Actions are used to automate things you do in PSE. Open a photo and the actions window and choose one of the actions by clicking on it then click the little arrow shaped action to run it. PSE comes preloaded with a few and there are a ton of them that will do different stuff.

That sounds like a macro in word processing.

Window>Actions is not available in Photoshop Elements 10. This command was introduced in Photoshop Elements 11. In PSE10 you need to install actions (.atn files) in the appropriate folders.

If you want the action to be displayed in the Effects panel (Photo Effects), you need to copy/paste the .atn, .png, and .xml files in the photo effects folder. You can also install the action so that it will be accessed via the Action Player in the Guided Edit mode. Some actions won't have an .xml file. The .xml file creates a category for the action in the drop-down menu under the Photo Effects tab. If the action doesn't have an .xml file, the action will show up in the drop-down menu in the "Show All" category.

There are a few important points to keep in mind when installing actions in Photoshop Elements.

1. Photoshop Elements cannot create actions; only Photoshop can.

2. The action has to use commands that Photoshop Elements "understands" or the action won't work in this program. If you try you will get an error message to the effect that the command is not available. Or worse -- you could cause PSE to crash.

3. Actions written for PSE7, 8, and 9 will work in PSE10.

4. Beginning with PSE7 Adobe changed the format of the .xml file. Therefore, for example, if you have an action written for PSE6, you may have do some tweaking to make it work in PSE10 (as well as in PSE7, 8, and 9).

Here are the instructions to install actions in PSE7 through PSE10 (Windows) so that they are accessible in the Effects panel.

1. First of all, make sure you have your folder options set to show hidden files and folders. The path you need to navigate is a hidden one.

2. Make sure PSE is closed.

3. Extract the contents of the zipped folder. Copy/paste the .atn, .png, and .xml files in the photo effects folder. (Your action may not have an .xml file.)

Windows XP:
C:\ Documents and Settings\ All Users\ Application Data\ Adobe\Photoshop Elements\ x.x\ Photo Creations\ photo effects

Windows Vista and 7:
C:\ ProgramData\ Adobe\ Photoshop Elements\ x.x\ Photo Creations\ photo effects

4. Delete the Mediadatabase file.

Windows XP:
C:\ Documents and Settings\ All Users\ Application Data\ Adobe\Photoshop Elements\ x.x\ Locale\ en_US\ MediaDatabase.db3

Windows Vista and 7:
C:\ ProgramData\ Adobe\ Photoshop Elements\ x.x\ Locale\ en_US\ MediaDatabase.db3

5. Open PSE. Wait for the program to rebuild the MediaDatabase file. Check under the Photo Effects tab. You action should be there. Just remember -- if the action doesn't have an .xml file, check in the "Show All" category in the drop-down menu.

If you want to install an action so that it will show up in the Action Player (Guided Edit), you need to do this.

1. Set up your folder options to show hidden files and folders.
2. Copy/paste ONLY the .atn file in the actions folder. DO NOT install the .png file and the .xml file (if there is one).

Windows XP:
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Adobe\Photoshop Elements\x.x\Locale\en_US\Workflow Panels\actions

Windows Vista and 7:
C:\Program Data\Adobe\Photoshop Elements\x.x\Locale\en_US\Workflow Panels\actions

3. Open PSE. Go to Guided Edit>Action Player. The action will be there in the drop-down menu.

The best is yet to come. Purchase a little gadget -- Add-O-Matic. It will install not only actions in Photoshop Elements but also custom shapes, brushes, layer styles, patterns, etc. It costs only $14.99. Moreover, graficalicus (graffi)'s customer service is a five-star one.

quote=Joecosentino Hi. I use PSE 10, I am not to ... (show quote)

My issue may be that PSE can not do the functions I am asking it too. I need to reverse the red and blue color channels.
I need need this to process files from an IR camera. Maybe it's time to look at photoshop.

Will photoshop allow2 installs one desktop and one laptop? I will have to check it out
Thanks
