I going to try something new, and see if it is acceptable by Ugly HedgeHog users and administration. Since I have my own website, I want post one photo from a new gallery on Ugly HedgeHog and provide a link to my website so you can view the rest of them if you desire too. Any comments you want give about a gallery or photo you can either put it on my web page and/or Ugly HedgeHog. Please get back to me and let me know your thoughts. Thanks, Arnold

The link to the rest of my photos is http://bit.ly/sQGcTs

As a user I like the idea. We'll see what the admins think.

Really like the first yellow flower and the ibis (great exposure setting.) Curious as to the ringlight: I've read that they can make the image appear flat--and I noticed that in some of your pics--but in others there was plenty of dimensionality. Did you have / use the capability of setting different exposure levels on opposite sides of the ringlight?

Joe, The Sigma Ring Flash only allows you to completely shut off one side or the other, but doesn't allow to adjust to a specific power setting in either side. What I try to do, is to angle myself so the flash gives shadows so you get that sense of depth.

What do you think about me providing links to my own website when I post a photo on Ugly Hedgehog to allow you to see more of my photos that I took at the same location?

Like the spider depth of field, nearly completely in focus. It would be nice if you supplied a little more tech info. Ring flash type, theory or usage of extension tubes, tripod or handheld, exif.

Great photo! Thanks.

Hi,
most ring flash units I ever used there was a sinle circular tube. The only way i ever found to vary the light emmission from side to side was to tape a single layer over one side of the tube (left or right side and you got some gradation. Its a cheap easy fix. You can also tape a colored gel if you are looking for an unusual fix.

Let me try to answer all your questions.
1. I use a Sigma EM-140 DG Ring ITTL F/Nikon AF.
2. These photos were taken with a Nikon D300S and a Nikon 70-200mm f2.8 VR lens and 20mm extension tube. In order to freeze any movement in my subjects, obtain the best depth of field, a dark/black background, I used my Sigma Ring Flash to illuminate these images. Since the ambient light behind the subject is much lower it registers as black in my photos. I used Lightroom 3 to enhance all the photos and Photoshop CS4 photos on #1, 6, 9, and 12.
2. Extension tubes allow you to get much closer to your subject and is determine how wide the are.
3. I handheld the camera and manually focused it to take all these photos.
4. For exif data on individual photos, go to my website and put cursor over the photo and click on the i. You will see all my camera setting plus more.

I hope this answers all your questions. Arnold
