Hi!! I love photography and have always taken pictures but never had a decent camera. Well I just got a Nikon D5100 and it's so confusing!!! I love taking pictures with it but don't really know how to use it. I have read the user manual but I feel like I'm reading greek. LoL. If anyone haves advice on this camera it would be great!

Welcome to UHH. You captured Razzer's attitude well. Take your camera out and practice shooting. Try the same shot at different settings and see what happens.

A nice introduction to UHH. I can see from you introduction photo's that you enjoy photography, and are doing a good job at composition.
Manuals can be intimidating, so I suggest you just take some time with each section from the start, until you understand it. If not, this is a good place to ask a question in regards to that operation.

Hi TleighA, welcome to the hog. Your first posts are excellent. Good sharp pictures. You are doing quite well. But, if you feel the manual is greek, you are in good company. As i told others here, go to a good book store, or Amazon, look for the MAGIC LANTERN GUIDE books and find the book that tells you all about your Nikon D5100. It is in common language that takes the mystery out of your camera. I used it for my camera and i learned so much from the book.

A new camera takes time, I would read the manual again and have your camera next to you so you can play with the buttons and dials, and if your like me every time you go out shooting and makes tons of mistakes you will find you are slowly getting the hang of it and this forum is a great place to get feedback and ideas. Now Go play 8-)

look for the d-5100 for dummies book (not calling you a dummy) also a copy of Bryan Petersen's understanding exposure. In plain non techie English, he will explain how to use the fstop, shutter speed and ISO to take not only technically correct exposures but creative ones also. His book is the Bible of photography. Next take your manual in one hand and your camera in the other. As you read about each function press the button or switch the switch. You can not hurt your camera. if you get lost Nikon kindly has a reset to where it was set coming out of the factory. on your camera body you should find two places that have a green dot. press both simultaneously and poof you have undone any changes. Photography like any other hobby has its own language and concepts. I have been shooting for 44 years and am still learning! you have already done the first step by posting photos. Now learn from the critiques go out shoot some more, post here on the hog, Read the critiques repeat often. Also have a thick skin when it comes to criticism. I like most people believe in encouraging criticism, but there are some that practice the brutally honest method. The critique may be correct, but undiplomatic. You can still learn from them. In reality the only opinion on your work that matters (unless you have a client) is yours. I wish you good luck
