Just received a new 35mm 1.8 lens for my Nikon d7000. I would appreciate any advice on how to make the best use of this lens (conditions, types of shots, etc.)

Pretty much anything you can imagine.

I have one for my D3000 and I use it as an event lens when lighting conditions are poor. With the ISO performance of the D7000 you should get some wonderful shots.

I do take the occasional portrait with that lens. If you do that, keep in mind that a 35mm lens should be used for full body shots even on a cropped sensor camera to avoid facial distortion.

Keep in mind that you can lose focus quickly wide open at 1.8. I usually use mine at 2.8.

Another thing, when you find the magic aperture where you achieve maximum sharpness, it's really sharp. Pictures of people show flakes of skin and chapped lips.

I'm a Canon guy and I have their 50mm f/1.8. This lens is especially useful for those shots that require no flash but do offer at least some light.

Example: Flash can really upset an infant. So when shooting my newest grandson now 4 months old, I have my wife hold him near one of our larger windows. This lens is great for that kind of lighting. Example included.

Canon t1i, 50mm f/1.8, ISO 800

It is my sharpest lens so I use it when that matters.

It is also my lightest lens so I have found myself using it more than any of my other lenses for general walk-around use.

The only down side compared to zoom lenses is that it requires more fancy footwork for composition. I usually don't mind that.

Of course it also does not have VR but with the fast glass it is usually easy enough to get a high enough shutter speed to get sharp shots.

Mine rarely leaves my D50, It's a great walk around lens and I've even got some pretty good macro shots using a set of Kenko extension tubes.
