Presently I use GIMP for PP and I'm interested in possibly purchasing one of the Adobe products, or any product, that has the same, or more, features as GIMP. I'd like to keep the price at, or below, $200.00. The learning curve isn't an issue. Any suggestions.
Are you aware that GIMP can use lots of the presets available to Photoshop?

Are we talking about plug-ins ?

It always upsets me when I see the cost in $ of software.
I am interested in Lightroom 4. there's an offer here in GB asking £90.00
Why such a difference.
There have been times when I have come across an extra, unused copy of software, and have sold it. I suspect that some may fall off the back of a truck. I'm not sure frankly... That's why I check carefully the description, the ranking and the reviews of the seller- oh and ignore the above no matter how stellar they might appear from Hong Kong, China ( same thing now huh?) or similarly any third world country. They will be pirated copies.

Try PaintShopPro x5 Ultimate -- under 100, usually available for 60 to 80 somewhere. Good deals directly on Corel most of the time too.

If you have never had PSP installed then order the CD boxed set of X-5 Ultimate. You will get a lot of extras; like, plugins, and the ability to use Photoshop type plugins that are available for free.
Once you have it installed and running you will discover that the current version will be good for several years.

Greg suggested Elements 11, you might think about going with one of the PhotoShop programs. They are just like Gimp and you should have no problems switching over. There are free trials available from Adobe.

Just a user...
You don't have to be an educator. If you are a student or have a student living with you then you can get the student discount. Full PS, with the student discount is about $200.00.

Hi Wahawk: I'll second PaintshopPro by Corel... I had one of the first versions out there way back when an 85 mb hard drive was considered huge....I loved the program it was easy to use and used it more than the photoshop program I used... I don't remember when I got away from Paintshop and switched to Photoshop but if the newer versions are as user friendly as the old program was, I would certainly recommend it... I can still remember air brushing a black and white photo into a colored one, with that program. The results were amazing for the time, kinda like compairing the old movie Tron ( First movie to use computer generated characters) to the one that came out a couple years ago. My how times have changed.
Everyone I know who started out with something other than PS ended up switching to PS as their photography progressed. My advice is to start out with any PS product so when you are ready to "grow" then the learning curve won't be so difficult.
Corel Paint Shop Pro X4 or X5

There is a little difference, PSP will cost a few dollars, while GIMP is still free.

What do you need that GIMP doesn't have? Did you know about GIMP registry?
There is almost (no BS) 1000 plug-ins!!!!!
Photoshop Elements 11 does many of the things that Photoshop CS6 for Photographers does, but in automated form. Instead of having to create a layer, make a mask, fill it, reverse it, etc you select the effect and apply it and a pre programmed set of actions takes place to create the result. You have less control than with the full Photoshop, but the learning curve is much more user friendly and it will allow you to do most basic editing and correcting of images. As mentioned, PSE 11 is on sale at Costco for $49, a full version of Photoshop costs hundreds and is much more difficult to learn. Lightroom 4 is basically a storage and cataloging program that also contains simplified versions of some Photoshop editing tools. It can be paired with either Elements or the full Photoshop for a complete system.

Actually, my question was, what do other programs have that GIMP doesn't, if anything. I am aware of the registry and I'm investigating the use of the plug-ins.

Well folks, thank you for all of your replies. I've done some preliminary investigating and determined that GIMP has all the features, and more, that most other programs have. I've decided to stay with GIMP, you can't beat the price, so I have more to spend on other gadgets.
