I am a grandmother and want to learn about photograpy. I have been taking photographs of my children and grandchildren for the past few years but would love to know more to get better pictures. I also lived one year in Europe and had a wonderful oportunity to take wonderful pictures but I wish I would have learned more about it. I bought a Nikon D90 with two lenses before going to Europe and now I would like to update and start taking some photography classes and learning through sites like this. I am a retired RN and have worked for 40 years now I would like to do something I really love and I love to travel and take pictures. So any help you all can give me please do. The first question I have is regarding my camera. Can anyone tell me what I should upgrade to. Which would be the best option. I am also sending a picture of one of my wonderful granddaughters for you all to give me pointers. My Grandchildren love to get their pictures taken so we have a good time when doing this.

I would keep your D90, there is absolutely nothing wrong with it, I would put the money towards classes or photo trips IMHO

No worries. I have a D90 and it's way more capable than I am!

A sturdy tripod will be a good thing to get if you don't have one, makes the camera more versatile

I think you have made a great start to the year by joining UHH welcome by the way.

I am of the opinion you should get to know your own camera first by reading the manual thoroughly. Get to know the setting and what they are for, post images for advise and just let things evolve. You are not the only one trying to learn it never stops.

First, welcome to UHH, I think you'll really enjoy the folks who play here. Second, what is it you want to do that the D90 won't do? The D90 is a great camera that has an abundance of features and capabilities. You may want to consider looking into upgrading your glass or remote flash options, reflectors, umbrellas, soft boxes and on and on.

It looks like macro2009 beat me to being the first from the UK to welcome you, but I send you just as warm a welcome, and of course you'll get help and support from this community.

I'm much the same as the others who have suggested you stick with your D90 for the time being and just get yourself in the groove again with your camera. We have an idea of what your favourite subject matter will be ..... so can you let us know what your two lenses are?

My other questions are ..... what are the most important things you'd like to learn about? How familiar are you with how your D90 works and how to make it work for you? How familiar are you with "the exposure triangle", for instance ..... since learning how to get correct exposures is just about the first thing that will help you retain and improve your own motivation ?

Let us know the most important things, then there will be plenty of help forthcoming from people who can stick to the point and give you the specific answers you need.

Welcome to UHH -- my suggestion would be to take your classes and really learn to use what you have before even thinking about an "upgrade". The unit you have now is more than capable of extraordinary photography and even with oodles of classes, you probably won't exhaust it's capabilities.

Hi barefootn, welcome to the hog. Im not familiar with the D90, but from the posts i have read, it seems to be a great camera. I agree with getting a tripod if you dont have one, but, invest in a good lightweight titanium 'pod...it is easier to lug around. Dont worry, any question you could possibly ask here, will get you more answers than you could possibly want. LOL. Just make some friends and have a good time.

Your camera is a good camera. Getting bigger and better never works unless you learn how to use what you have. When you are ready to make the next step you will know by looking at your pictures. Cameras come and go, but if you get good glass. You will have it forever.
I shoot a Nikon D300s, but have lenses from back in the 60's. And they all still work on my 300. :)
