Recently while shooting I got a message that both my cards were full. I tediously removed some of the earlier pics I had already downloaded to my computer. In order to save space for the rest of the day I changed the capture from RAW + jpg to just large jpg. That apparently deleted all of the RAW shots I had already taken that day. ?? At least they weren't there anymore. Is that normal?
When I checked the second card on the computer it said it was blank. When I checked it in the camera it said it was full! I've reformatted it, but I want to avoid this problem in the future. Any ideas?
By chance, did you delete them on a Mac? Sometimes the Mac will delete the photos from the card but store them in a folder on the card so they can be restored.
I delete my photos in the camera for this reason.
No, I work on a PC. Actually, I've had this second card in the camera for several months without anything recorded to it. And I had formatted it after downloading the images that were on it.
When you switch from RAW to jpg only the camera will only display the jpg files. The RAW files are still there if you view the card on your PC.
If the camera was reporting the card as full and it wasn't then the file system was corrupted and reformatting is called for.
You did not specify what camera or brand of card so it is hard to speak directly to your problem.
Canon EOS 1D Mark iv.
The RAW files were NOT there when I downloaded pics from the card to the computer. Shouldn't they have been?
How do you have the 2 card slots configured? When you take JPEG & RAW, is it configured to send the JPEG and RAW files to separate cards? If so, you need to delete them separately from each card. My camera is set so the JPEG goes to the SD and the RAW to the CF.

Yes if everything was working correctly the RAW files should still be there when you download.
I have had some quirky things happen in the past with SD cards. Now I just make sure I reformat in camera before each shoot.
I have them configured to record simultaneously (RAW and JPG) to same card, and to flip to next card when first card is full.
