What Is This?

This thing looks like a cross between a gun, some weird cooking utensil, and an elaborate medical instrument.
It is of course none of those things: but can your work out what it was used for?

Struggling?
Well, it is in fact an eprouvette: an old-time device that was used to test the strength of gunpowder.
Fill the device with 'powder, fire it, and the explosion in the barrel pushes the gauge out; the further it sweeps, the stronger the gun powder.

That's pretty cool! I've been around firearms most of my life and I've never seen one of those. Interesting piece of mechanics. Thanks for showing.

Hide it or its sure to reach the gun control crowd - their mantra will be cant' let horrible gun owner increase the power of their load.

With gun powder involved, that would be pretty extreme.

You were just speculating, though, right? Maybe that's where the designers got the idea for this powder tester.

I'm sure in the right hands it could be.
