I was browsing ebay when I saw this lens, item no. 140877839233. It's a Polaroid 900/f8 mirror lens for $259.95. I'm not familiar with it & I'm hoping for some feedback on it. It sounds suspiciously cheap to me.

I tend to collect big lenses-some of my collection are okay-some are crap. Have any hoggers heard of this lens?

I own a 40-year old Nikkor 500-mm reflex (mirror) lens. It has a fixed aperture of f/8. I use it sparingly, and am happy with my results.

Polaroid 900-mm f/8 lenses have flooded the market in the last few years, but I have my doubts as to there resolution & sharpness.

Thanks Nikonian. I checked some reviews-not good. I don't think Polaroid lenses are known much outside the US. Can't always judge by price, though. I have a Samyang 500/f8 & use it with my D3100 & D7000. It was as cheap as dirt but it is surprisingly sharp.

I am pleased with my Nikkor 500-mm mirror reflex lens. Here are a few examples:

Nice photos. I've never used a mirror lens as I've always thought they were not quite as sharp as a refractor, but your photos prove me wrong. It makes sense as I use the Nikons through a 10" Newtonian, which of course is a mirror, with sharp imagery results.

Samyang are amazingly great lenses and receive darn good reviews even when compared to sigma/tamron

Hi JR1. My Samyang 500 was only around AUD$250 & that included a 2X converter. I bought it 'blind' on ebay, not expecting much but I got a surprise. It's as sharp as a tack. I use a good tripod & crank the ISO to 800, which makes it fast enough, at least in daylight.

I shoot sony now as well as Nikon. I have a sony 500mm mirror reflex lens f/8 which works well on the sony A77 because it is well built for this type of lens(the Minolta 500mm does also, and the sony is just a modern day version of the minolta with better coatings.).These are the only 500mm mirror lens (I know of) which allow the auto focus to work, and give good results. At least for the Sony.
Stay away from the cheap 500mm lens

Thanks GeneS. My friend has a Tamron 500/f8 mirror. It's OK. I also like Sony gear. I do time lapse stuff with a Sony camcorder & am keen on trying some hi speed/slo mo. About the cheapest camera that is half decent is a Sony NEX-SF700 & it's up around 10K by the time it's set up. I'm tempted but it ain't cheap.

There are some good mirror based lenses out there. I have used them from time to time. Like most lenses there are good and bad. I can't tell you about the Polaroid you mentioned.

However, the common failing of a mirror lens is when you want to introduce "bokeh" into an image.

Mirror lenses produce circular OOF highlights.. like with a hole the middle, or rings of OOF light. Most of them however, do not come in largish aperture configurations.

Hi Saichiez. I do have a mirror lens, but it's rather large. It's a Celestron 10" Newtonian with motor drive.
When I aim it at some distant galaxy, the last thing I want is 'bokeh'. I want good focus from corner to corner.

On my last post on 'inferior lenses', I mentioned that I had just ordered a Sigma 70-200 f2.8. Well, I have since ordered a Sigma 120-400 as well. I know the 150-500 only costs a few dollars more but the 120-400 is more compact & I have a 500 prime anyway.
