Some posting in this thread will be in for a real shock if they ever need their gun for self defense.

While the argument that a little 380 will make a hole is true your goal when facing an armed assailant is not to just hit him you must incapacitate him to the point that he can not even pull the trigger.

If you shoot a guy with a small caliber he will blow your head off with a 44 then drive himself to the emergency room for medical attention.

The goal is not to cause him to seek medical help you must drop him in his tracks.
Where I live it is cold in the winter if an intruder has on a heavy leather jacket a shotgun with a bird load may not penetrate that is why I keep a short barrel shot gun with the shoulder stock replaced with a pistol grip and loaded with 12 Gage 00 buck.

Several years ago I was living in a house with a in-closed back porch it was hot that night and we left a window open in the kitchen near the door out to the porch.

My wife woke me and said someone was trying to get in the house.
I got out of bed with my shot gun peeked around the door frame and saw a man at the door.

I racked that pump and yelled freeze he ran like hell he knew what that sound was.

Nothing will instill fear like the sound of a shot gun being pumped.

This is just one of those cases where the gun stopped an intruder without firing a shot.

Is that the Joe Biden defense. Just go out to the back porch, point a shotgun in the air, fire one and the burglar takes off?

If you ever take your gun out, be ready to use it or it may be used against you...

I agree with about 90% of what I have read in this thread. I will add a bit, though:

The “AR” in AR-15 and AR-16 does not stand for “Assault Rifle,” it stands for Armalite Rifle, the good folks who designed and built the first AR-15, which was originally designed and sold to civilians, before the military adopted the “select automatic” M16. Prior to that the military rifle was the M-14. Few would call the old M-14 an “assault rifle,” but it was. Kind of a cool gun to shoot casually, but not a great assault rifle.

When it comes to home defense, you shoot to STOP the intruder. Think about that when you pick your weapon. When the mafia “hitman” used a .22, it was a contact shot to the head. No hitman ever tried to complete a contract killing with a .22 from 10 yards away.

There are all kinds of good training opportunities in firearms for civilians in various locations all across the country. I took most of my handgun training at Front Sight Firearms Training Institute in Nevada. One of the things they really stress is awareness of what is in front and behind your intended target.

Hollow points in your handgun for home defense, or 00-buck in your shotgun. I have a friend who self-loads is 12 gauge shells with dimes! Now, that has got to really hurt, being shot with 6 or 7 dimes! “You can keep the change!” 😄

If you cannot hit what you aim at it matters not what you are shooting! Find a weapon with which you are both comfortable and accurate. Then practice, practice, practice.

If the time comes when you really need a firearm for personal defense, and you don’t have one, you probably won’t ever need one again.

While I love my Canon 5D Mk IV, I would not want to have to protect myself with it. For that I prefer my Walther.

Enough said.

Ok my 2cents. We keep a 20 gauge with 00. My wife is small at 5ft nothing but can walk a 2 liter bottle from 15 yards to 40 with a full size 45. She doesn't much like the smaller 45 sizes though. I am not fond of 9mm or 40's because of possible over penetration. Yeah I know about newer ammo.
So the thing is just what everyone seems to be saying. Use what you are comfortable with.
