Addditional Lens

Recently got a Nikon d7000 with 18-200 lens. In addition to this lens, I would like more flexibility to shoot with a lower f/2.8 aperture (18-200 lens has f/3.5) to get better DOF control. Any suggestions on what type, model, feature, prime lens would best complement the 18-200? Cost is a consideration.

Thanks

The 18-200 is a great lens. To compliment it I would suggest either a 35mm 0r 50 mm 1.8 aperture. Both are fairly reasonable in price.

You will enjoy the D7000, it's a great tool.

If cost is a consideration and you want a fast lens the f1.8 35mm can't be beat. It will be the sharpest lens you'll ever own and is about $200 new.

If cost becomes less of a problem the 10-24mm Nikon lens is fabulous. It expands your wide angle range nicely. But it isn't faster and, like the 35mm, does not have VR. Since I use it mostly for landscape I want high f-stop anyway so I am not concerned about its low f-stop capability, which might be 3.5.

Personally I think the 18-200 is a dog.
I'd rather change lenses than have one that tries to do it all.
But to answer your initial question about low light work. I have no hesitation recommending any of the 50mm F/1.8 lenses.

Agree, 35 or 50 mm with F1.8.

Kind of depends what you are shooting. I used to shoot the 18-200 and a nice low light lens that covers the same spectrum is the 70-200 2.8. Fantastic low light lens!!. The "Nifty Fifty" 1.8 is also a good recommendation and can be had at a very affordable price but you'll never get the range of the 70-200, 2.8. If you have the bucks I'd get both, if your're short on cash the 50, 1.8 is probably your best bet but you need to be on top of things to get the shot. Not a lens for outdoor sports IMO...........
