I have a Nikon D60 and am looking for a laptop for photo editing. I am not an apple guy but lean the other way. Suggestions would be welcome.

Hi peddler buying a new laptop depends on a number of factors firstly your budget then you need to look at the performance i.e. ram memory hard drive processors etc. I have a number of laptops, computers all with a wide variety of uses and performance but they all do photo editing and my every day choirs, if i was you i would get the best possible performing computer/laptop for the budget you have.

The saying goes, "Get the biggest, fastest, newest, because tomorrow it will be outdated"
Money has lots to do with what you purchase.
I would suggest get the fastest processor you can afford, matched with a minimum of 8 gigs of RAM. I would also suggest, if you can find a off the shelf laptop that has it, a primary hard drive that is solid state (SSD) and a second drive that is 750 to 1 terabyte in size.
A screen size of 17 or more would be invaluable in editing or a smaller size screen and an external monitor.

I use a custom built laptop for editing and general computing. (3.2ghz processor, 16 gig or ram (can expand up to 32 gig)512gig SSD and a 750 gig SATA, along with several external drives, all networked.

I don't believe in promoting any manufacture here. If you wish additional information, please PM me.

I just bought a Toshiba L955 series - has the intel core i5 processor. Lots of speed. Got mine at Staples.

Ditto on fast processor and lots of RAM. Brand of PC or MAC depends on what your comfortable with.
Lots of debate on which is better, but like a camera, it is a tool dependant on the skill of the operator to produce desired results.
Good hunting.

Very good selection here. I favor Toshiba. Have been encouraging clients to buy Toshibas for about 15 years... because I never have to work on them. Very reliable.

However, the biggest disappointment of a laptop is always the screen if one is going to do a lot of HEAVY Post Processing. So if using a laptop, make sure the laptop has and HDMI output. (most should) to drive a dedicated screen for PP.

I suggest step up to the i7 Intel Processor, and get 16 Gb RAM. The i5 is sufficient for most purposes, unless you are going to really hump the work out with Photoshop CS6. If you are staying with Elements.. the i5 and 8Gb of RAM will suffice.

Stay with Windows 7. The jury will be out for a few months on Windows 8. It's a Microsoft move to pander to the iPad/Android crowd and as such is not directed to Productivity, but rather social media and recreation. The grumbling is already starting in the business and productivity market place.

It may be too late, unless you find a tech who can put Windows 7 on your new computer in a "dual boot" mode.

I am running Windows 7, when I need to get work done, and using a second OS... Android, when I am not serious about anything.

The record of Microsoft and Operating Systems:

Windows 3.0, Windows 3.1, Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows 2000corp, Windows ME(millenia), Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 7.

Red OS from Microsoft all busts. Hmmm. Windows 8.???

That was a reasonable choice. Most of us here don't need the extra horsepower of the I7. The I3 leaves a bit to be desired. I suggest the I5 and the money saved from the processor choice should go to memory, video card, and drive space.

No matter whether you choose a Windows or Mac machine the important thing to purchase is RAM. Buy as much RAM as your new laptop will allow you to install. I have not heard of anyone who is has purchased a new machine with Windows 8 that is happy with it.
