When the flakes started to fly early this afternoon, our normally "friendly" backyard birds exhibited that "It's mine!" behavior before the snow covered the seeds.

Thank you, C43. Once this started to happen, my wife and I took turns--cameras in hand... one at the front window and one at the back. I always end up with backyard duty so to speak.

When we do the ONE camera thing, she is the "spotter" and is really great at it. She says I daydream too much and miss spotting some of the best bird angles. Hey, I'm trying so maybe I will be a better spotter in 2013!

Thank you, 2MATO. Is that a long A or a short A vowel sound in your moniker?

Your description of you and your wife's bird spotting is funny. And you have a great variety of visitors.

It was FUN! Now, we are looking forward to the storm coming into PA on Saturday morning. Will be interested in seeing if this behavior is repeated as the flakes fly.

Great shots. You have quite an array of feathered friends there.

Thanks, AuntieM. Add to that mix some regular cardinals, bluebirds, red-bellied woodpeckers, and blue jays. For some reason, our dishes and suet feeders are the toast of the neighborhood.

We can't figure out if fewer local folks are involving themselves in bird feeding activity at this point or our yard is providing more protective cover than other areas. All we are sure of is that we are providing the same feeding stations with the same food as previous years. Heck, we are also drawing some neighborhood cats that should be indoors.

I miss some of the NE birds here in NC, although I did not know that the Carolina Wren went that far north. Miss my Redpols, Juncos, Piliated Woodpeckers, and Grosbeaks. Don't have Pine Siskins here either. Very boring in the wintertime....the birds are mostly passing through. March is a great time on the Outer Banks....the Robins all of a sudden appear by the hundreds, eat everything in sight, and then move on. It's quite a sight to see.

Do you get any yellow-bellied sapsuckers in NC?
