This is the biggest Red Head Woodpecker I have ever seen. Most times they are smaller birds. Neighbors tree - does appear to be dying unfortunately. And a Woodpecker is never a good sign I hear.
Interesting bird. It's a Pileated Woodpecker...and yes, they are very big birds. It's a rare sight in my neck of the woods, but always a welcome sight for birders.
Ashrunner, thank you for looking. Yes I was surprised by the size. Was really busy for a short while before taking off.
I saw one of these in a tree in our yard yesterday. I was working under a truck and dropped dirt in my eye and let out a loud groan then heard a bird call that sounded like a laugh. I hollered out that it was not funny. I crawled out, looked in the tree and saw this same kind of bird, grabbed my camera out of the cab, looked up and he was gone, I heard him in the woods, laughing at me again. I hope that I see him again today. I want his photo.
Audie - great story about yesterday. Hope your eye is better so you can capture him in a photo. I believe he will be back. Once they find a tree to peck at they seem to come around for a while.
NowSayCheese - I also did not realize there were different red heeaded woodpeckers yet when Ashrunner mentioned the Pileated I also looked up and learned that this type was indeed very large. Thank you for looking and the informational links.
Yes I got lucky in seeing him let alone capturing!
Yes, they do keep coming back to the same spot. Almost every time I go walking in the back I see this guy. That pole must have a plethora of insects in it.
wow! Nice shot! thanks for the share!
wonder if, since you are both in Florida, could that be the same bird? lol
nimbushopper - nice capture! Yours shows how large this pileated woodpecker can be - the size of crows if not larger.
We have a pair of the pileated woodpeckers come to the suet feeder every day
Just a great pleasure to watch.
The pileated woodpecker is the bird Walt Disney use to model woody woodpecker after. The adult pileated stands about 28 inches tall.
As for other types of woodpeckers they are the downeys, hairies, red breasted, red headed, and flicker. At least those are the ones I'm familier with. I'm sure there are others.

There are also Acorn, White-headed, Lewis', Golden-fronted, Black-backed, Three-toed, Ladder-backed, along with Nuttall's and Red-cockaded Woodpeckers. I'm sure there are more, but my mind is blank on the rest. However, Flickers are in the woodpecker family and so are the sapsuckers.
Another one is the Red Headed Woodpecker, he is becoming hard to find in many areas, but look him up he is a real handsome dude. There are also woodpeckers called sapsuckers, my favorite name is the Yellow-bellied Sapsucker, sounds like something John Wayne would have called a tenderfoot.
