A Failure to Communicate

There was a famous line from Cool Hand Luke, "What we have here is a failure to communicate."

We see that a lot here. "I'm having a problem with that little round thing on the bottom of my camera. What should I do?"

When people try to explain a problem, they have all that info inside their heads, but they often forget that the rest of the world knows nothing about it. Unless you present all the relevant data, it's tough to come up with a solution.

Leo Notenboom has a weekly Q&A in which he tries to offer solutions to computer problems. He said that many questions go unanswered because he doesn't understand the question. Take a look at the link below.

Too true.

Same goes for instructions.

How do you get 20 Elephants in a Mini Minor?

10 in the front and 10 in the back.

I also like the famous quote from... I think from Cannon Ball Run or Smokey and the Bandit.

"What we have here is a complete lack of respect for the law!"

Correction: "What we're dealin with here" etc

I love Ask Leo! Yes, this is so true... It is a big problem, and it's only getting worse with the plethora of smartphones and tablets out there. These devices don't make it easy for an otherwise literate person to communicate a complete thought. Unless it's a simple answer, I never try to post or respond to a question using my tablet. My kids laugh at me all the time when I post something on FB in complete sentences. They tell me: dad nobody reads your posts because they are too long... I always retort that a least they can read my posts. :-)

We are raising a generation of "lazy" or "rushed" communicators. I see the miscommunication at work all the time. Smartphone text messages or emails that are hacked together---probably sent from the road in a car doing 65mph. When I reply for more clarification, I get responses that become even more confusing. Pretty soon, communication has deteriorated so much that it takes a full 1hr scheduled meeting to resolve. What a waste.

Okay, enough of my rant about "smart" devices.

Sometimes, people don't know what specific question to ask because the topic is so complex and they don't understand it at all. But, they ask a question anyways to the best of their ability. Good communication is often difficult requiring patience on both sides.

Right. The person on the receiving end must have some communicating skills, too.

Heard an interesting line on TV tonight:

"How do you eat an elephant? One bite at a time."

Some things really bother me!
If a turtle doesn't have a shell, is he homeless or naked?

If naked, he would be arrested. If homeless, he would be ignored. Such is our society.
