What works for me
Made from an old card board box
7"long
Top dimensions 7" wide at top and bottom 4 3/4" sides
Base dimensions 2 7/8" top and bottom 2" sides
As you can see this is tapered outward which is important, you want the light to Spread out and not be concentrated at the end. My fist two soft boxes where oval in shape and same size both ends, this only concentrated the light source and did not soften.

Inside is lined aluminum foil
A little tape and your set
Good quality single paper towel and plastic for end. Lots of different buffer materials you can try.
In the photo you see a plastic packing material 2 sheets thick. Works good and water proof but does have a hot spot in the center. To test Buffer material stand in front of mirror and fire watching for results. Single paper towel with plastic reveals an Even diffused light when tested.

This is a work in progress still got to make or buy a bracket for my flash so I can get it off the camera and be able to put it out towards the end of my lens. I have used it on a stand to test it out and it gives a decent soft diffused flash. As you can see in the picture of the flash firing pretty even light just a minor hotspot in the center.

I used a utility light and a Stofen type diffuser to make it.
I cut a hole in the utility light the size of the Stofen the mounted the Stofen with JB weld that way it will just slip on the flash with nothing else holding it the reason for the Stofen is to have a way to mount plus it spreads the light into the reflector to help get a even light. Used a Styrofoam plate as the diffuser.
