I am grateful to have stumbled across this forum. I have been into photography for quite some time as a hobbyist. I am interested in taking my photography to the next level and have A LOT to learn. One of my biggest questions lately has been about making a software choice for editing/processing. Any direction with that, to start, would be a big help! Thanks in advance!

Hi there Alisha, when you post some photos if you want critique simply request it. Enjoy the forum. 8-)
Thanks Bmac. I'm trying to decide on software. That seems to be my biggest hang up right at the moment.

I like Paintshop Pro. It does not cost a lot and is easy to use. A lot of people like Photoshop as well, a bit more costly but you can do more with it. I do not do much in the way of playing with my images so Paint shop works well for me. Some of my friends that have Photoshop took a look at Paintshop Pro and they like it and said for the money you can't beat it. Photoshop has more bells and whistles.
And welcome to the forum!!!

Thank you Mike,
I do not like to manipulate my photos much either. The local photographers around here must use photoshop CS with pre-made overlays, etc. I like to create beautiful images naturally, but do enjoy a few fun effects now and then. I currently have a RAW image converter software that came with my camera, in addition to PS Elements v10. Most of what I do with my images has to do with cropping and changing color to monochrome with some partial saturation of those changes. Nothing major. The market for portraits here is heavy on the altered, faded images that seem to all look similar to me.

IMHO Picasa 3 would be a good starting point. Google it, it's free software you can download.

Hello from Florida and welcome.
I have Lightroom4 and love it - affordable and will do most things photographers want for their photos. The edition from B & H Photo in NYC comes with an instruction CD, divided into separate chapters so you can learn at your own pace. ( you'll get lots of opinions on this web site - gets down to personal preference )
Good luck,

Welcome. Sounds like you have good start to your photography career. I have a MacPro and use iPhoto which fulfills my needs. Good luck with your choice.
[quote=.Alisha.] Welcome to the HOG Alisha. I love Photoshop Elements. Many UHH members use some form of Photoshop. Elements is about $100 and has most features and you can get great advise from this site. David in Florida.
