i keep trying different combos. this time its 105-mm macro, + 1.4x teleconverter, + full set of tubes.
i think i get better pics without the teleconverter.tom
The eyes are rendered nicely.
It's a hard call, I have a 1.4 tele converter also and have never been sure if the loss of sharpness is fully worth the added magnification, I used to have a 2X but got rid of it because I decided that there was a definite quality loss. I think that tubes are definitely better than a converter, but then your focus distance is limited...

Make sure you buy a full set of automatic extension tubes, so that auto-aperture (important) and auto-focus (helpful) is preserved.
