I got the 16-85 last year for use on my D300. It's a great lens I think you will like it. ;)

The 12-24mm is a neat lens but it's even more expensive than the 16-85mm. Do you often need an ultra wide angle? When I need wider that my 16mm end goes I usually shoot it as a panorama and get good results that way. That would be up to you if that would even work for you. When I shoot panos with a wide angle I typically do them as verticals with the camera to keep the distortion down. Try it sometime and see what you think. Check Ken Rockwell's reviews, he has done the 16-85 and the 12-24 both.

Having had no bites for sales and having done more research, I will try the wide kit lens (only costs $100 new) to see if its OK for indoor group photos.
Thanks to everyone for your advice.
