Can I pleases have a bit of advice on the use of a tripod. First time I have used one and want to get shots of all of us together.
I have a Nikon D5100 with an 18-55 lens and will use a remote, I assume I turn off the VR, set up the shot and half press the shutter release to get the focus, then when ready and in position fire the remote.
Will I have to re-focus on every shot or will it stay in focus assuming no-one moves about too much ?
These shots don`t need to be too special, but i would like them fairly good. They will be taken in daylight coming through patio doors and a large window and maybe if needed the flash on the camera.
The only real concern I have is about the focus aspect.
The grandson doesn`t like having pics taken, but if i let him fire the remote he may co-operate. :-D

Focus the lens where you want it, and switch off the AF, then there is no way it will refocus unintentionally.

Thanks, was a bit worried I would have to jump up for every shot.

You shouldn't have to jump back and forth for focus with the remote,,it should do it (focus just fine) from where you are at when firing your remote. Nobody will be moving that much anyway, and if it does have to re-focus, it should be minimal. Just press the button, and keep your AF on (should focus and take the pic),,no problem. Give it a try. You are correct in turning off the VR, since your camera is on a tripod.

Your other option is to do it the way MT suggests.

I just played around with my D600 and the remote. Every time I pushed the remote button, the camera focused and then fired. I have it set to AF-C, Shutter Priority, that the Menu > Pencil > a1

Thanks Jerry, we are pleased with them, remote wouldn`t work so will have to send back, but we had fun with the timer, one shot I only got my arm in it as I tripped over the dog on the way to the settee. :-)

The remote probably had a thin plastic insert covering one of the battery terminals. Did you pull it out? Also, you probably realize that you have to set the camera for remote operation.

Yes mate, pulled out the plastic and even tried a new battery, also set the camera to remote and remote with delay but no good. Trouble is to send it back to Amazon will probably cost as much as a new one. lol

It will cost you nothing, not even a label. Sign on to your Amazon account. Hover over "Your Account" toward the upper right. Then move down to "Your Orders." Find the order for the remote, and click on the arrow next to "Available Actions." Select "Return or Replace Items." You will be able to print a label and return it via UPS at no charge.
