Big Family shot

Hi gang I'm doing a family phot session Sat whaich will include a large group shot (19) adults and children. I assume the client has a large area in the house any tip or pitfalls to avoid. I always tell the adults to ignore the children. I've done this before and I end up with frames where the kids are looking at the lens but mom or dad is peeking at the kids to see if they're lookin.
I'm bringing my studio strobes. I intend to set them up on either side of the group and use a speed light placed behind the group to flash the ceiling..wadaya think

sounds like you have the right gear. I would think DOF is going to be your biggest worry with that many folks.
If it was me I would do a lot of test shots first. It gets them relaxed, and have fun on these with them. Let them know why you want a few test shots. Make sure you pose them so all the faces show. Have a good set and post them for us!

You are doing what I do about the kids, that also goes for pets (if they are included). Get their attention, and the adults should know better on what to do without being repeatedly told. Get them to look slightly above camera level, to ensure the eyes appear open , and not half-closed.
Too easy these days to get it right, with digital instant play-back.

With large groups, you can tell everybody to look down and then on the count of 3 to look at the camera.

If you do that a couple times, people will start to laugh and you'll get a more natural pose. Maybe say something funny or cheesy at 2 ("wait...what comes after 2").

If anyone has any other ideas on making sure all 38 eyes are open and liking at the camera then let us know!

My advice would be, to be ready for the unexpected, meaning that the 19 people may be in a very small space. Don't assume they have a big area for you to work in, you may want to explore the space and see what will work the best. Their big space may not be a big space to you.
