Weather is very cold and wet, so thought I'd play in the house, nothing very interesting but need the practice, also wanted to try out the flash diffuser.

As always happy for any hints and tips

Looks like you'll be ready when the bugs show up

All of your images appear just a tad dark on my monitor. Nothing serious. Looks like less than a stop.

What camera, lens, & illumination are you using?
What ISO? Are you shooting aperture priority, shutter priority, or manual?

Pentax K-r camera at ISO 200, with Tamron SP 90-mm macro lens, manual at 1/160-sec (couldn't get the 1/180 this time but static subject so not so important), Yongnuo Speedlite YN-560 II (set to 1/2 power if I remember right) with homemade diffuser.

could be using the hood on the lens, just habit I always fit it, but the final element is recessed a good couple inches and when down to the minimum distance the flash doesn't get to illuminate fully. Will have another play though, fine tune, see if I can improve a bit more, thanks.

Your watch face Exif says ISO 400, 1/160-sec at f/11.
Your red flower Exif says ISO 200, 1/160-sec at f/11.This may be the shortest duration at which your camera will synch with speedlight. Your manual will confirm.

I suggest ISO 400, as it appears as decent resolution.

I do not recommend using a lens hood during macro-photography. As long as your illumination is not directly pointed at front lens element, you do not need a hood.

Make sure your DIY diffuser is not losing light. If you increase speedlight to full power, you can drop aperture to f/16.

Had another play today, making sure the lens hood was off made a large difference, also discovered that this flash max sync is 1/160, my old flash had the extra contact for the 1/180 sync speed, but was no where near as controllable for its output, pictures pretty much as out of camera, just a crop where necessary.

ISO200, 1/160, f/18, flash 1/2 power.

All are decent images. Looks like you have the right exposure formula figured. At these close Working Distances, the narrow DoF is quite apparent.

I like the composition of #3, and it is an interestingly unusual PoV of subject.

Thanks for the help and tips, finding the macro interesting, if I had been on the ball this morning could have had the camera set to sequence the flower opening up whilst we were out.

Hopefully find some crawling/flying things in the future :)
