I have recently upgraded to a full frame camera and want to sell a D300s in perfect condition. I am trying Craigslist but all I get is Garbage requests to give my paypal info and then ship it somewhere for a friends son or cousin or something. They all have a weird story as to why they cannot meet. My Questions are:

Has anyone ever sold to one of these adds and how can you not get ripped off?

I just saw that UHH has a selling section, has anyone had good luck there?

Thanks for any help.

Craig's List is a swamp. Watch for 'gators and snakes. They're all over. BUT... you CAN get some good deals IF you watch yourself. And you can SELL, too, just be advised.. GET PAID FIRST. USE A BLIND EMAIL ADDRESS, and NEVER give them YOUR ADDRESS! Meet at a neutral location.

Thanks for the Advise.
They all offer to pay first using PayPal, is there a way that you can get ripped off using Paypal?

I sold a D5100 on Craigslist.

Watch out for those 'buying for my cousin in Iraq or similar' I made the fact known, no shipping and will sell local only.

Sold it and lens for good price and one guy drove an hour to get the deal with cash in hand.

I'm not aware of any way that PayPal can rip you off.
You do NOT want to be in the middle of some kind of foreign shipping thing. NEVER send Money Orders to Nigerian princes, ya know?

I sell on Craigslist but always insist on a local cash transaction. All these scams about sending to cousin, niece, or nephew are just that scams, they will send you a fraudulent check or a fraudulent paypal payment or dispute the transaction... Best to just sell for cash, then you have no worries.

Selling on CraigsList for me would require "Cash Only" and meet at a local McDonald's, Hardee's, etc to make the exchange during a reasonable time of day!

I have sold a few of my lenses using Craigslist. I do the same as Sarge, list local pick up only and I also state "ridiculously low offers will simply be ignored". I always meet at the local starbucks and my husband always goes with me. The only time I had someone come to the house was when we sold our old washer and dryer, hard to drag that to starbucks. My husband and even a neighour were home.

I still laugh at when I posted my extra 24-70 for sale for $1,100. I stated I was selling it simply because I had received the 24-70 mark II as a gift from my spouse, some fool emailed me saying "I'll the lens right now for $300 cash", I ignored the email, he emailed me 4 times each time getting more and more upset and rude. I emailed him back finally saying "If you cared to read my ad, I stated "ridiculously low offers will be ignored". This lens sells for over $1,300. I have accepted an offer from another person for my asking price, you will NOT be notified if the lens is not sold.

He actually emailed me back saying something long the lines that he was the first person to email me so I HAVE sell it to him at his price and he was going to report me to craiglist and they would ban me. Strange/Crazy people out there.

Craigs list works great for selling things locally where the people show up. Otherwise don't even think about it.

eBay is a better choice otherwise.

I add a note on things that usually attract scammers; e.g. autos, that say unless they plan to show up in person with cash don't even think about replying because the response will not make them happy.

I sold a $6,000 motorcycle on it this year plus many other things; e.g. refrigrerator. All were cash deals and they had to show up at my house. I am well protected at my house is by Smith and Wesson and other reputable suppliers.

I have sold and bought on Craigslist. I use cash only and local pick up and when I buy I go to them check the item before I pay.

I use Craigs list fairly often, meet at a neutral location, mall parking lot etc. Cash only, and does not hurt to have a friend go with you.
Never had a problem.
I also use ebay and use paypal exclusively, never a problem there either, post copious images of what you are swelling and accurate description.
Oh and I ship flat rate, quick and easy.

Yes, I like CL. I have bought and sold a huge range of items. Cars, water heaters, lenses etc.
Yes, the scammers will be obvious. I sometimes list my cell phone #. That eliminates most of the idiots right away. Never had a problem. Just excercise caution, not paranoia. I have bought/sold misc stuff as cheap as $25 and as much as $6000. Good luck.

Yes, I have had good results with both, I allway put this in my ad. <B>IF YOU CAN STILL SEE THIS ITEM, IT HAS NOT BEEN SOLD. SOLD ITEMS WILL BE REMOVED IMMEADIATLY <BE>, then if any one Emails to ask if I still have it, I just delete it. This does not happen with UHH Classifieds.

Thanks for any help.

I've sold on UHH (see my feedback) and on eBay (as "desiengineer" ). I have had more success on eBay because there are more buyers than curiosity seekers....I get more hits (traffic) on UHH but it seems they are just looking.

I believe that eBay is safer for buyers than UHH. The buyers on UHH do not appear (to me) comfortable buying on the web and in general do not know how to make a safe transaction.

If buying on UHH it is best (safest for the buyer) to do the transaction via PayPal. The seller should invoice the buyer through PayPal. If the seller doesn't deliver the item the buyer has recourse through PayPal.

As a seller take all the usual precautions: Don't ship unless paid, don't ship to P.O. Boxes or to third parties, use a shipping method that provides tracking, etc. Also, negotiations which contain personal or confidential info should be only conducted by PM.

That being said, I have found UHH members to be honest and have not encountered a problem with selling to members. Since this is an open forum I'm sure there are some members who will take advantage if you let them or are not careful.

eBay is set up to automate the selling and buying experience and to make it safe and reliable as long as you use common sense and follow the rules. If you are an eBay seller I'm sure you have or will run across buyers who don't pay or are just plain flakey.

PayPal can be OK but sometimes not.. I sold a camera on EBay for $1600 and it was paid for via PayPal. The cash arrived in the PayPal account and I transferred it to my personal bank account.
I then mailed the camera to the supplied address..
A few weeks later PayPal contacted me and demanded the cash back saying that the item had been paid for using a stolen Credit Card. I shot back an answer denying their request. Legal threats followed which I ignored. PayPal have now frozen me out of EBay.
Seems that their 'protection' and 'safe trading environment' aren't always up to scratch. So please be careful out there....
