I understand Canon has a bigger share of the market. Why do most discussion threads in this forum center on Nikon? ... people talking about upgrading.... asking questions about use etc?
Yes interesting isn't it?
Maybe it is because Nikons have better sensors and Canon dropped the ball with the 5D3.

....or maybe Nikon shooters have more problems with their cameras and are constantly trying solve problems or find something better that works.... while Canon shooters go on their merry way;-)

There's only one way to resolve this.....
FIGHT!!
Let's just agree that we have an affinity to different systems and move on. I used to be a Nikon fan until digital appeared and early Nikon prosumer bodies were (IMHO) dire so switched to Canon (EOS). Now I'm happy with the system but can't say that it's better or worse than Nikon.
Vive la difference. (Canon DSLRs are pretty great though).
But to your question; I've not been here long but I do detect a somewhat defensive vibe from Nikon owners (who seem to be very strident about how great Nikon are),. There's the inevitable good-natured jibing from Canon fans at this but there seems to be very little discussion on the Main page about the Canon EOS series, even less about companies with a smaller market share. Maybe we should just create 2 main areas on UHH (Nikon and Canon) and just ignore each other. None of us will ever change camp so it's pointless winding each other up.

A lot of the "Nikon" talk on here reminds me of people that talk about cars........ Like those that always brag up all the good things about their Lincoln/Cadillac, etc and say anything else is unworthy to be called an automobile!!
If we didn't all have our preferences for how a company (for any product) puts together the features and options available there would only be ONE brand and it would be called "Generic". Same situation exists for major appliances, universities, in fact ANYTHING that can be discussed.

Nikon was clearly superior several decades ago when many of us got into photography. Canon is technically competitive now but not better, so those of us who have tens of thousands invested in Nikon are not likely to switch.
If you are just starting out, you would not go wrong with either brand.
But before you make a commitment, consider the opinions of others on this site (tune out the opinionated rants) as well as other sources such as:

And in the "old" days I preferred the Minolta/Pentax/Yashica cameras as they tended to give results just as good as the Nikon/Canon group.
They were all good in certain aspects, just offered different options, just like today. And just like in cars, some brands just charge more for the "nameplate".

Canon "may" have a larger market share. Canon certainly is the most popular camera for-sale on Craigslist. Those Canon sellers are probably moving to Nikon.
I'm retired from Canon USA and my quality cameras are Nikons, and always will be.
While Canon makes some nice point-n-shoots, the Nikon DSLRs are far superior.
I think they all have their pros and cons. Here's what I always said to customers when I was selling cameras. Regardless of whether you were purchasing a p&s or a DSLR with all the bells and whistles,,,put in your hands first. If it feels good in your hands, and is easy for you to operate and understand,,,you are more likely to enjoy and use it. If it's uncomfortable and difficult for you to use,,it's probably not the right camera. The other consideration is to make sure it meets your photographic needs now and in the future if building on a system. Bottom line,,,I think they are all fine in their own right.
