Nikon Mirrorless 1-J1

I am considering buying a small lightweight camera to use as my "walk around camera" since my D7000 is somewhat heavy. I have been attracted to the Nikon Mirrorless 1-J1. Does anyone have any experience with or thoughts about this camera? I have found one on sale at $299.00 which seems to be somewhat less than what they are selling for.

Thanks so much for any information you may have!

I'm a Nikon D7000 owner too but have to say I think they missed the mark on their mirrorless models... I don't think I've read a single favorable review on any of the models to date. They chose to use a smaller image sensor than the common 4/3 type and subsequently it falls short when compared to pretty much any of its competitors...

Then again, for $300... that's a pretty good price... If it was closer to $500 then it would have to compete with the Sony models with the same size sensor as your D7000.

I'll be interested to see what other have to say.

If you want to get into the mirrorless market, I highly recommend the m4/3 or sony nex format. you can alway get adaptors to fit your nikon lenses.

I have an Olympus EMP2 with a 45mm f1/8 lens and find myself grabbing that camera for daily candid shots of my kids, vs my pro body E5 w/12-60. The EPM2 is a fraction of the weight and a blast to shoot, especially with the touchscreen.

I'm considering right now selling off the E-5 and most of my lenses to switch solely to that format. The OMD EM5 is a spectacular camera, and the Lecia 25mm f1.4, Olympus 75mm 1.8, and 12mm f2 would suit my shooting style perfectly.

Leave the J1 to Ashton to shoot.

Thanks much for the response. I realized as I read your response that I had meant to say Nikon 1-V1 not 1-J1. It seems that the 1-V1 is a better camera. I think I'll do a little more comparison work!

Thanks for the response. I realized while reading your response that I had meant to say 1-V1 not 1-J1. I believe that the 1-V1 is actually a better camea but I believe I'll do some comparison work. Thanks again!

If you can foot the bill, I highly recommend the EPM2 or EPL5. I'm now able to push my iso to 3200 and 6400 and still get very usable files. I can't go above 2000 with my pro body. Once I get the 20mm 1.8 or 25mm 1.4 (not sure which one yet), I'm going to be hard pressed to lug around a big camera again...never thought I'd say that.

Find a store that carries them, and go play with one.

I have the V1 and am happy with it for a few reasons.
Pros:
Very quick focus with many focus points
Colors look great
Fast and good for taking pics of running grandkids
The 18.5mm lens is great for portrait really brings out DOF
Nice range of lenses also can fit my Nikon lens with the F1 mount
Cons:
Small sensor but I will not be using it for large prints

I have the Sony nex5 and love it. Nice and compact, and surprisingly good pics. A bit more than your $300 tho.

The advantage of the V1 is that it has an available viewfinder.

But I don't think you'll find it for $299.

Did you consider a P510? They were also on sale for $299 a bit ago. They have a viewfinder and a wide range zoom included so you don't need lenses as well.

There are comparable Canon, Fuji, and Panasonic models.

is that with one lens or two, a friend just bought one. with two lenses for $499plus tax.if you can get it around the same price go for, it just as good as all the other stuff they have, the only way you will is spend more money. im thinking of one for my self. but all the other 4 /3 that cost $600 or more you might just well get a d5100 or d3200 d3100 you will get a better picture.

Hi Bram boy
That's with one lens, the 10-30mm which actually gives quite a bit of zoom! I received the camera several days ago and couldn't be happier! It is easy to use, takes very high speed singles and great HD movies and very nice singles. The optical viewfinder is also great and is coupled to the zoom and views through the lens. Apparently my $299.00 deal was a two day special because they are back up to $399.00 now at the same dealer - Kenmore Camera in Washington State.

There is no flash but one is available.

Fezz
