Canon USA has two facilities, one in California and one in New Jersey. I wouldn't send a Canon lens anywhere else.

We're cinematographers for NFL Films, Athletes in Action and others. Our cameras are DSR 500 and later. We have had Canon lenses repaired by Teleoptics, an authorized Canon ENG service in Dallas, Texas. 972/241-6610. 2655 Villa Creek Drive, Suite 242, 75234. He has repaired several lenses for us and done an excellent job.

Only one problem with Canon repair and it involves the age of the lens.
A while back I sent a Canon 28-70 2.8 L lens to NJ for a clean, check and calibration, and they sent it back to me saying they no longer offered support for this lens.
Keep in mind this is an L series lens that I paid over $1,200 for some years back.

I tripped while carrying my camera and popped my 17-85 EFS lens open. Sent it back to Cannon and asked if it could be repaired, $95 later it was back good as new.

If you are in the Southwest region, I can recommend one.In Chandler, AZ. C.R.I.S is an authorized service center for most or all major brands,-cameras and lenses. They do warranty work and non-warranty. They are very professional and did a good job for me for two different issues, both warranty related. You can Google them and decide if that is an option for you.

I too damaged my EF-S 17-85 and sent to Canon for repair. It cost about the same but I'm convinced I received a new lens from them.

Yes this is a sad fact that if Canon no longer keeps a product in its line, they guit servicing them... Pretty sad when you pay that kind of L$L$L$L$ for a lens and they won't work on it.

I recently had a problem (Dropped it) on my 28-70L. The Manual/Auto focus switch broke off. My local Camera shop here in Portland was able to fix it. They can actually do a lot of things as long as they can get the necessary parts. (Which Canon quits making when they drop a product). They also did some repairs to my 80-200L. I am very happy with there service, pricing, and turnaround.
Good luck,
Randy
