It's been a long time since I've posted any photos, but I have a few of my daughter. Sometimes her photos are serious looking but, I prefer her smiling. I'm printing these for her as a gift for Christmas. She is a model and likes the non-smiling shots.

Anyway, my main questions is about white balance or knowing what is a good color for the skin and color tone for the background, etc. I know shooting outdoors will bring a different color then shooting inside. But, I just want natural looking results whether shooting inside or out.

Can you tell me on each of these photos if the color looks correct to you. As well, any other critiques are appreciated. I use a Canon T3i and XS with a telephoto lens, or Macro 100mm or standard kit lens. My flash is a Canon 580EX II, which gets used straight on at full power. If I have a friend helping me, I'll ask them to hold a reflector so I can bounce the flash. Well, any suggestions are welcome. Thank you all. Cheryl

Here's my thought.

You have them in order of best to worst.

1) No comments. Looks ok to me.

2) face looks a bit over cooked in post. Looks like it could have been desaturated. The dress is pretty bright for this type of shot. Typically warmer colors for this type of environment is better. Most of this stuff you can deal with in post.

3) Much to bright on the shoulder and chest. This one is incorrectly lit.

4) way to busy with to much depth of field. This picture has a model posing issue and makes her look heavy. Clothing that is busy like this is almost never a good idea. A calico cat with white should have never been in the picture. The white draws your eye down to figure out what it is.

That's it for me on a quick pass.
Maybe the captain will chime in.
He usually catches obvious stuff I miss.

I typically look at my picks let them sit come back and look later. Repeat this process then decide if or where it fits in my portfolio.

1 and 2 are keepers. I would rework the post processing on two.

Russ

Looks like you have reordered(and removed some) your pictures after this post.

Sorry I tried to repost them all so the originals could be downloaded and I deleted the initial ones I posted. But, my internet kept timing me out. I will have to try to post them again. But, I appreciate your comments Russ and will try to correct some of the issues in Post Production. Thanks again, Cheryl

Well, I have Photoshop Elements but am not at all good at using it -- yet. So, I use Picasa 3 or a very old program PhotoSuite. I do shoot Raw + JPEG. I keep the Raw files stores in case I ever get proficient enough to do my own photo corrections. The one photo that is shown and can be downloaded, I used a flash off camera via a cord. Unfortunately, it was the first time I used it and I wasn't aiming it correctly. The bottom of the photo was too bright. And, I know the cat shouldn't have been in the photo. It was a stray cat that entered the photo shoot, not intentional.

On that one photo, the foot positions need to be changed as the position used in that view makes her left knee (right side of pic) look oddly disfigured. Not something a model would like in a final view. Otherwise I really like this photo, but the highlights could be lightened just a bit and increase saturation just a little bit.

I find the cat distracting but I love the pose and the colours in the dress.

Brian: Thank you so much for your attempt at fixing my images of Lorna. I really do like what you did to it. So from all the comments, I should have blurred the background more, possibly had her wear a solid color dress (so it wouldn't have blended in as much). Get rid of the kitty (sweet cat...but wouldn't leave us alone). I do know the lighting is sort of flat, but I'm not sure how to fix in future photos?

Again thank you for all your comments. I did go to a website that someone here suggested in a different post and read the do's and don't of portrait photography. I think I did a lot wrong. Oh well, I'll keep trying. :) Cheryl

Bright, busy color's on the dress along with a bright, busy background, otherwise, the photo's look ok. Just my opinion.

That was originally number 4 and my original comment. Hands in the pocket also broaden the hips.. Not good.

New to all this but her left knee looks quirky with the way she is posing that foot and the cat is distracting, especially with the backend towards us.
