My friend needs to buy a camera for her son who lives abroad. He'll use it mainly to photograph his children both stills and video.
Which do you recommend. He's an amateur. Is there a different camera you'd recommend in that price range. Thanks in advance for your help.

Hey Doc ..... because you state video I suggest the Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ200 ..... this is the super zoom that all others are compared to for video, focusing speed, electronic view finder and now a constant 2.8 aperture .....

Panasonic is quite a bit more expensive. I would suggest the Canon SX50 over the Nikon P510 because of the more flexible LCD positioning and the longer zoom. Excellent camera.

I find the focus on the SX50 is faster and more accurate. The P510 seems to seek a lot.

I'm a big fan of the Nikon Coolpix P510.

I picked one up this past summer while traveling down the California coast. Paid I gave my daughter my less than a year old Nikon Coolpix L120.

This is not my professional camera, but it is the camera I use on vacations and get memory making photographs without lugging around bigger bodies and an array of lenses.

The Nikon P510 offers a 24 - 1000mm equivalent lens (all optical), and more than enough shooting modes to keep you entertained. The 16-megapixel images blow up crisp to any size you'd want. Full 1024HD video is an added bonus - including slow-motion. The big LCD viewfinder articulates on a horizontal axis so one can easily shoot above one's head or around the knees or lower.

No RAW, but big enough JPEG's. I don't think you'll be disappointed.

*Please note that my opinion is based on actual ownership and usage versus magazine bias/hype.... ;)

P510's LCD is strictly a TILTING screen, where the SX50 is fully articulating so that it is always possible to view the screen regardless of sun angle or how you want to position the camera, including from directly in front.
The SX50 does have the option to save in RAW format.
The SX50 has a built on Hot Shoe option.
The SX50 has a remote release option.
The SX50 optical zoom is 25-1200mm equivalent plus an excellent "intelligent digital" zoom.

Here's a review that gives the nod to the Nikon:

and here's one that gives the nod to the Canon:

Again, I shoot and love the Nikon for my "fun" photos. I don't use it for shooting assignments.

I had the SX50 for about 2 weeks and took it back. In the bright light, the SX50 will take stunning shots. I was impressed with it sharpness and zoom. In low light, the aperture setting is so restricted that getting a good shot is very difficult. If you are going to be inside a place where the light is low and because of distance to your subject, you can't use the internal or external flash, this camera will not perform.

I'm with the above: I have the DMC FZ-200. It's a fab camera, the 2.8 aperture is great, I love it. Recommend it very highly.

I also own the Nikon P510, I bought it as a backup camera, but now I use it as my main camera. It does everything well from Macro to Landscapes to portrait and with the 1000mm zoom, I have gotten photos not possible with any of my other cameras. I recommend it to a friend and he bought one also and not dissapointed..And it also does video and panarama photos.
